What did you do in the garden today?

Due to my pitiful germination rate on the shorter season (58-65 days) tomatoes, I have an open row in my garden. I might fill it with purchased starts, or maybe something else from seed. Or maybe a bunch of onions.

The very best germination rate I had was my own saved seed from my Amish Paste. 19 for 19, and the plants look good. The second best was also saved seed from a friend, Cherokee Purple (never grown it before) and it was 7 out of 9.

The seeds I purchased were at BEST 3 of 9. And some of them I planted twice, so it might be 3 of 18.

I really hope some of the purchased seeds do well, tomato-wise. I'd like to save seed from them and have more tomato diversity. I want some determinate varieties that produce big tomatoes for canning.

I've had mediocre luck with seeds this year too.... Maybe a 30% survival rate, at best. I say survival rate because I've had quite a few that sprouted but then don't thrive or grow well. I've had to supplement with purchased starts too....

I had a visitor in my garden. It really liked my swiss chard and bean leaves . So i stole the deer netting from my big bed and put it on the short one. Ive been looking at insect netting but dont know what size to buy and reviews generally say they are wet? and some moldy?
My beds are 8*4 & 8*16. I bought half inch pvc as props for netting. I think the pvc is 8 feet? so the netting should be 8 feet wide?
I also just realized that my beans i planted as a sister are actually bush beans instead of pole Now I cant find my pole beans. Sigh!

My hoop house is 8 ft x 18 ft. I bought my netting from agfabric.com. I ordered TWO 20 ft x 20 ft pieces. My HH was supposed to be 10x20. I figured I would need the extra length because of the height and I wanted it to cover the ends as well.

Needless to say, agfabric gave me a terrible customer experience. They ended up not having the size I ordered but didn't TELL ME until 2 weeks after my order was placed. They tried to substitute FOUR 10x20 pieces instead. As you probably know, your plants are pretty susceptible to pests in early spring so I begrudgingly agreed to the substitute simply because I didn't want to prolong the wait by trying to find another supplier. Only they STILL didn't ship me the substitute for another month and only after I complained. I won't be using them again.

However, my HH ended up being smaller than I planned. It took me 3 pieces of 10x20 to sufficiently cover it. I tacked it to the HH frame with a staple gun and zip ties. The extra fabric was rolled up at the bottom and secured so I didn't have to cut it. I wanted to preserve the original size (10x20) so I can reuse it next year without having to worry which piece was laid a certain way.

Finished weeding the okra and weeded some of the sunflowers and the blue berry patch. Did the final thinning of the sunflowers and cut and placed the poles for the last too trellises, just have to secure them tomorrow. Also found another bigger patch of wild plums. One of the trees is absolutely huge by wild plum standards. The trunk was about 16inches in diameter!

I got the hoop house covered with insect netting. Not pretty but it's functional.

I've got at least 8 types of determinants planted this year for the same reason. The only determinates I had last year were Fireworks and they were awesome and I do have some of them planted this year I'd really like to get a feel for what else is out there.

Harvested the last of the osaka mustard and bagged up 3 qt bags for the freezer. I needed the space for tomatoes but they were getting ready to bolt anyway. Pulled more beets, we'll have those and the greens for lunch tomorrow with a baked potato. Speaking of potatoes, I might have buried my starts too deep, nothing has come up yet. Picked a few strawberries and they were delicious, lots of fruit on the crab and regular apple trees. We got an inch and a quarter rain last night, might be more on Thursday. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Oh, and I saw the strangest thing this morning in the greenhouse, a slug coming slowly down a thread of slug gook like it was a spider on a thread of silk. I had no clue they could do that.

Some garden progress. Haven’t posted baby Robin pics, but they are still there and I have the photos...maybe I’ll post pics tomorrow.

We worked on stringing one trellis today for pole beans. Need to complete it and do the other one. The greenhouse near me will close for the season this weekend, so it was B1G1 free today.

worked on bending conduit for structures for the insect netting. Harder than it looks to get the right sizing.

I planted out basil, calendula, delphinium, marigold, daisy, cucumber and some other starts. I organized the plants in my hoop house and apologized to the last of the tomatoes who haven’t sold and are looking kind of scraggly. I know its silly, but i feel sorry for them knowing they’re probably headed for the compost.

That is what we did here bid salad pork and rib roast cut up to go on for protein.. bought tomato otherwise it all came out of the garden
