What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. Got a little sidetracked yesterday. I had to pick up my new gas grill at HD. I also picked up another tank of lp gas. That took longer than I had hoped but it's done now and setup outside. I did get the front yard mowed and most of the trimming finished in the backyard. What is left will need to wait until Thursday or Friday. I'll be setting up the brooder in a little bit so that will be all set when I get the call to pick up the new chicks. Three out of the 4 hills of butternut squash are coming up. The corn is doing well. I need to add more dirt to the potato bags. Ugh! The green beans I planted in the cucumber patch are doing well. It's supposed to get near 90F today with evening and overnight thunderstorms forecasted. I may do some spot watering today and wait to see how much rain we get overnight before doing everything. My rhododendron blooms are not fully open so I'll wait to take a picture of that, but I put together some recent shots of the flowers and included a picture of little Miss Ellie sporting her new Cape Cod bandana in the backyard. Happy gardening all!

Those pictures are stunning! I wish I had such beautiful flowers. I am trying to build a pollinator bed in my back yard but we are still trying to figure out the best way to build a raised bed the size I want which doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. I have two chain-link fence lines that I want to put them along. Both lines would be approximately 20-25 ft long x 2 ft wide. I need raised beds because my dog is still young and very destructive. She loves to dig and would probably enjoy ripping my plants out. My yard is also sloped so I need the capability to "steppe" the bed.

Anyway, once I figure that out, I have two different lilac shrubs, a golden flame honeysuckle, some tuberose bulbs, and a slew of other flowers including poppies, calendula, columbine, and more.

Good morning gardeners, we arrived safe and sound last night after our fifteen hour journey. I have exploring to do, as I've never been in this city before, and I haven't been on this little property before either. So far plants are alive but unhappy. It'll be hot today, so I'll try to acclimate them a bit before I just throw them out the door, lol. Have work to do today.

To be honest @TJAnonymous most of the flowering plants and shrubs came with the house when I bought it. I’ve tried to nurture the ones I like and have removed the overgrown shrubs. Other than the vegetable and herb gardens and the fruit trees the only flowers I have are a bowl of impatiens, a geranium and the cutting garden I’m building in my front yard. That and keeping the nearly half acre of yard mowed to a respectable height is about the most I can handle. I’m grateful for my wooded area that I don’t have to maintain.

Well, checked the garden- most are coming along nicely. The corn seems to want to fall over, so I put some stakes by them to hopefully shore them up. The beans are coming up already, so I need strong corn stalks. Several small squash, some green tomatoes, a few small zucchini- so all is good. The sun came out a little while ago, so will probably mow when the grass dries.

Have you looked into straw bale gardening? That might be a good inexpensive steppe garden... and the height of the bales could act as a barrier for the puppy. You could plant behind too.

Today I found out that my dahlia seeds have germinated! I was a bit worried as the package said 80% germination rate and that they needed a heating mat and grow lights, but 11 out of 12 have sprung in a dirt filled egg carton in the window :)

My grow lights, heat mats, and supplies are all home right now and I am not... I can't wait to see what these hybrids look like when flowering!

I don't think this would work for what I'm looking for. Straw bale gardening is more of a temporary solution. I'm looking for a permanent bed for perennials, shrubs, and bulbs. Also, I call my dog a "pup" because she isn't fully matured but she is already 80 lbs and could easily leap over a straw bale. I am thinking about creating a raised bed that is somewhere between 15" - 30" high, but also include a chicken wire fence to a height of 3' - 4' above that just to keep her out. I'm hoping the added chicken wire will be temporary until she gets out of the destructive puppy stage in a year or two.
