What did you do in the garden today?

My oldest son is in the Air Force. He got leave this weekend and is coming home tonight to visit with my granddaughter. It is the first time I've gotten to see him since Christmas!
Happy Birthday!

My oldest is in USAF too. Separating for the reserves, but just arrived home for good a few days ago. Hadn't seen her since Oct 2019 :( !!!

Robins today! Doing well, and filling up the nest. Still 4.

Stringing one of the pole bean trellis - beans are already a few inches up at the bottom! Also melon seeds in front of them have sprouted.

Tomato bed in back, pepper bed in front. They re looking good.

Gourds on South side of chicken run - gourds are sprouting in the bed - I think 5 different varieties planted. Purpose is primarily for shade!

So....those stupid cabbage loopers - the irritating green caterpillars ruined my brassicas last 2 years - so many that even Bt spray could not keep up. So, I dedicated this one bed to cabbage and brussel sprouts, and am trying insect netting. Success or failure - time will tell.

We added 2 cattle panels to one bed. Planted cucumbers at the base. Nothing else in this bed.

potato bed on the left - 3 types growing. dried bean bed on the right - pole beans at the tower, and bush beans where there isn't a tower. I am trying trellis netting on this structure for the first time. Looks sturdy enough, but we will see how the netting fares.

Still a few more things to do. No pics of the big bed right now - so, those will be later. A few more things to plant here and there. Many of the plants are showing herbicide damage, so must be a lot of farm field spraying going on right now - usually it is done by now, so I am a bit frustrated continuing to see affected leaves on many plants. However, once it leaves the air, the plants should perk up.

Today once the sun came out, I slogged out and did some weeding, then replanted some onions that never sprouted, cut gourmet leaf lettuce and spinach for a dinner salad along with the first two cucumbers from my three plants that I planted.

Garden this year, I did manage to get two raised beds started. One has tomatoes and beets in it the other, lettuce, spinach and beets. Then in the ground, 5 rows of red, yellow and white onions, two rows of bush green beans three rows of potatoes. On the exterior garden edges I have turban squash, butternut squash, cucumbers and summer squash.

Things were dragging along until we finally got some warm weather and rain. Now I'm almost wishing it would dry up just a bit.

@Acre4Me, your garden is amazing!

Couple things I've never planted before, one I've never ate can't wait to give it a try, both the seeds kinda shocked me, didn't look like anything I ever expected. The one I've never ate, Mammoth Sandwich Island Salsify, WOW! like ginormous caraway seeds, never would have thought they looked like that.
Other, Parsnips, I've bought them in grocery stores occasionally not very often but have ate them, never planted them before. IDK if any of you have seen rhubarb seeds but those parsnip seeds look the same like small round paper, thin, with seed in middle. Not what I expected figured like carrot seeds Lol!
Happy gardening!!!

tried parsnips last year. They took a long time to sprout. Then, it was sporadically. I think part of the problem was heat/dryness of the bed, even though I specifically tried to keep it moist. Finally, several sprouts looked good...until someone didn’t latch the chicken gate a few feet away. The chickens munched the parsnip sprouts! So, we never got to harvest any

I'm sure he's pretty happy also. Army back in '94 here, distant memory now but I tell you what even short time away from home felt like a eternity.
