What did you do in the garden today?

Thanks @NewBoots and neither do I. Given the family reputation of nightshade, I'm inclined to be more cautious than not.

It's about five by three feet worth if I were to condense it all in my mind's eye. But, also just identified another variety of nightshade... sheesh. Why is it always the deadly plants that grow well anywhere?

This is going to sound weird, but here goes. When we were way out in the boonies, DH would go out in the dead of night and pee. He gradually worked his way around the property line and go figure the darn coyotes never came in the yard... might be worth a try, discreetly of course.

Not weird at all. Male urine (with higher testosterone) is more of a deterrent. Plus, the nitrogen.

Wish I could talk DH into circling the garden.

@Sally PB I mean it isn't strange to me, but to some I'm sure it would seem odd. Like my mother in law, for instance. Sometimes I wonder that she and DH are even related.

We have to support eggplant and peppers here because the winds are brutal.

our winds are brutal too. but we have hot and dry weather so eggplant's stalk is woody. it grows slowly.

Grrr, all the info I found online about getting rid of nightshade jumps immediately to "oh just spray it with heavy duty chemicals!" First, can't use those I'm pregnant. Second, can't use those as I prefer a more organic approach to gardening that doesn't involve heavy herbicides.

Blegh, so I'm left needing to wait for DH to get around to it, or gearing up myself and being extremely careful. I'm inclined to do it myself, because the darn things haven't gone to seed yet. Need some of those heavy duty, rubber gloves that come well up the arm first though.

I always keep some nightshades in my garden to trap pests. nasturtiums as well.

I had a lot of catching up to do! It's been rainy & cold here, we got 2 inches of rain so far & 2 more to come today. It's good, we need it but it stinks for those Memorial Day parties.

Does meat count? We buy 1/2 pork every year from a local farmer, and last year we bought a sheep from our local high-school FFA. We try to grow as much as we can, support local farmers, and try to avoid buying most things from the Big-Ag exploitive industry.

I forgot about meat. We buy processed animals from local farms - no antibiotics, pasture fed & all that good stuff. Looking at getting local free range bulk, processed chickens now.

DH isn't a fan of dehydrated fruit. I like apples but my apple trees won't likely produce for a couple of years still.

I should have quite a few yellow squash this year...

And, of course, jerky! We eat a LOT of jerky. I asked DH to make some.... We've never done it before so it will be a new experience.

I made yellow squash chips in the dehydrator last year & they were SO good.

I don't really have a recipe I use, it's pretty much like @NewBoots said. I always just freeze my extra herbs but I've always wanted to try drying them if for nothing else but the smell in the house!

The dogs hips are giving out at an alarming pace. It's been sneaking up on us for three weeks, but I fear that the Rainbow Bridge maybe close at hand.

It guts me. Although I console myself with the fact that she's had almost a year with us, living the royal dream, that she wouldn't have had otherwise. Her previous owners simply destroyed her little body, and it's caught up to her.

Acute hip dysplasia in a 9 year old dog is not repairable. She's having trouble standing up from sitting, trouble walking (like a bunny), and she only has three steps to go outside 5 feet apart to get to the yard, and long walks (and short ones) are now out of the question.

Aw, poor Susie. I'm sure no matter what happens she knows she has had the GOOD life this past year with you.

Glyness for her lack of eggs (nothing since last winter) but there's something wrong with her so I'll do it this weekend. She's getting huge (like a meat bird) and clearly isn't as mobile as she used to be. I don't want her suffering and I'm curious what's going on inside of her.

That's what happened to my Dorothy just recently. She never went back to laying after winter & then got very sick. I tried to nurse her for a couple days & then we made the decision to end it. I wish I had it in me to cut her open and see, I know it was a reproductive issue so it didn't really matter in the end. Glyness is a pretty girl & has had it good.

Now I can't remember anything else I was going to comment on! But nothing happening in the garden with all the rain except I got all my neighbors late wife's dahlia tubers in just as the rain started. I now have like 25 dahlias planted all over. I certainly wouldn't have bought any had I known. The beans are starting to climb, the bush beans have flower buds, the teeny squash plants are flowering & the tomatoes have buds. My gardens is for sure my happy place. I've been able to get some fun stuff in there, like stone walk ways, a little stone wall etc.

I wonder if you could just cover it with some heavy plastic and smother it over the growing season. Pull up any strays you see elsewhere. Then you could deal with it later if it came back next year.

Now I see "if I condense it in my mind's eye." If it isn't a big patch, that probably wouldn't work.
