when there was no tetanus shot people used to put ripe tomatoe on a wound - if they were lucky it was summer, lol.

no water this morning so I could not water my garden. just picked up some mung beans, peppers (bell and hot) and a cucumber. it was too hot before 7 am so I don't know what to expect later. there is no hope for rain this month.

Anyways, I was chasing the chicks and the next thing I know I'm face planted on the ground. I turned over to see what the hell happened and see a rusty cattle panel half buried in the ground and covered by the grass. Never knew it was there....

Sorry for your fall and injury. I don't know the history of your little farm, but did you just purchase the property? Sounds like you need to do a good inspection of your property to prevent future injuries.

My chicken run is rather large (132 ft x 35 ft). I don't have enough spare chicken wire (plastic or metal) to wrap that large of an area.

Is it possible to confine the chicks to a smaller section of the run? Some inexpensive 1 inch chicken wire should be small enough to contain the chicks. As they grow bigger, just take down the temporary chicken wire and let them have full access to the run. Should only be a matter of weeks before the chicks are too big to squeeze through the 2X4 wire fencing. I think my chicks were 8 or 9 weeks old when I let them out in the run (2X4 fencing) and I had no problems.

I took the fall in the main coop this morning but no cattle panels to gouge me Wow

Glad to hear you were not hurt. Hope you fixed the situation that caused the fall so you don't have to go through that again. Never know when you fall on something, or even yourself, and then there is a problem.

Checking my main garden this afternoon, hoping to see good things. I found 4 zucchini just the right size for Dear Wife to slice up into stir fry. Checked on my pole beans growing by a trellis.... all plants were eaten down to the dirt! I previously put some chicken wire around those beans and trellis to prevent rabbits from eating the beans. Whatever ate the beans must have been taller than 2 feet high - I'm thinking deer. Anyway, total loss on the pole beans. Bummer.

Harvested a Kohlrabi plant from my new raised bed in the backyard. Not a plant that I usually grow, but giving it a try this year. Cooked the Kohlrabi greens in a pan with olive oil, garlic, and some onion. Let them steam about 10 minutes in a covered pan. Added a little salt and pepper and a bit of lemon juice. Served them up with some pizza for supper this evening. Dear Wife said she really liked the Kohlrabi greens. She like the pizza too. But when I cook a meal for her, she rarely ever complains about anything....

As for the Kohlrabi ball, the main item, I just like to peel off the outer skin and cut the Kohlrabi into strips. Then I just prefer to eat it raw. But I like most vegetables raw. Dear Wife prefers the veggies cooked, so tomorrow we will be adding some of the Kohlrabi to the stir fry.

That's what I'll be doing in about a week or so. I'll just staple the chicken wire to the coop and zip tie it to the wall of the run fence. A few sticks pushed through some holes into the dirt to hold it vertical should do for supports. That's the second part of my "look, don't touch" integration.

The first part will be with them staying in the coop for a few days/a week to "home" them to the coop. I did that with my first chickens last spring, and it worked very well.

It's raining here, too. A nice, gentle rain! No need to water for a few days, at least. And the weeds will be easier to pull. Which I need to do in the potato patch.

DIdn't walk the garden yesterday, so I will today.
Also will water the orchard.
Severe weather on tap for tomorrow.

The hayfield need a regular mowing to recycle some nitrogen, but there is fog at the moment, so I'll have to wait for that to dry out.

I woke up at 2am, ugh, battery died in my headset. Checked into the security cams to check on critters. ALpacas were up and all agitated, but they can get that way if they smell a coyote, or a moth lands on someone's nose. So I checked on the hens to make sure they weren't being eaten, nope, sound asleep. HOWEVER, their liquid fly bait hanging from the ceiling was swinging. Hmm. NO wind, closed building, fan off, everyone asleep. Turns out I witnessed the bait acting as a pendulum catching a micro quake. Caught another about 45 minutes later. Very cool. Perfect conditions and got lucky with timing.

Think I'll dehydrate some veggies today or tomorrow for longer term storage.
