What did you do in the garden today?

I need to pick some beans today! I saw some that are ready yesterday when I was down there. I also saw one male butternut flower and two Cherokee Purple tomatoes just starting to turn color.

Does anyone have anything to say about Cherokee Purples? The seeds were from a friend, and had the second best germination rate of all the varieties I had. I somehow thought that these produced larger fruit than what I see; I had hope they'd be "convenient" canning size, ie, NOT like romas that take 17 to fill a quart.

We are not likely to get rain for a few more days, so I'll water the gardens today/tomorrow.

It's been close to two months since we've had even a drop of rain

Is all that brown material mulch for your garden? It, unfortunately, looks like my front lawn this summer. We have not had any rain here for months....

:barnie We have another week forecast for high 80F's and low 90F's with no rain. For us, thats very hot and dry. I have a small creek running through my property that is usually about 1 foot high this time of year. This year, the creek is now bone dry. My lake front is the lowest water level I have seen in 30+ years I have lived here. There is an extra 15 feet of shoreline down by the dock. Water got so low this year that the front end of the pontoon was sitting on sand. First I had to pull the motor up into storage position, but then just took the pontoon out of the water altogether.

:idunnoAnd yet, there are a number of people reporting too much rain this year.... Not me.

Yeah, picked our first beans yesterday and threw them into soup last night. Those beans came from my elevated sub irrigated planter and are doing very well. Looks like we will have weeks and weeks of fresh beans for the taking whenever we want from now on. Although almost all my plants in the main garden are suffering from lack of rain this year, the plants in the elevated sub irrigated are thriving due to the water reservoir built into the planter.

Picture posted before, but bears repeat as it is one of my few success stories.....

:weeWell, no rain in the forecast, but as I write this response, dark clouds have filled the sky and there are a few rain drops falling right now. Looks like we might get some rainfall today... Just heard some thunder, so better post before we lose electricity...

I have one Cherokee Purple in the garden, it gave us our first 2 tomatoes of the season, one of which was the largest tomato I've ever harvested. This was about 2 weeks ago when I pulled the 2 off the vine. I have not gotten anymore ripe fruit since then but it still has plenty of inripe fruit. The 2 I've gotten so far have both been large, very sweet and not many seeds. The scale said this one was 1 lb 3.6 oz!

My golden variety has been giving me about 2-3 tomatoes every 2 days for the last week. Yesterday's haul is below, the okra is really starting to take off. We got a monsoon like rain yesterday evening and it poured overnight/this morning. I need to get outside as soon as possible to re-tie some supports. I have okra, tomatoes, and peppers falling over from the amount of rain that has hit them the last 48 hrs.

I had almost a dozen Purple Cherokee that have ripened so far... DH used them, along with a trio of Bradleys, to make salsa. He complained about the purple Cherokee and asked me not to buy them again. He said they were a pain to peel after being blanched.
I ate one fresh the other day and, while it wasn't bad, it wasn't the greatest tomato I've ever eaten.

So I'm not sure what I think about them yet. I also planted some yellow brandywine, along with Bradley, Celebrity, and Super Fantastic varieties. None are ripe yet except the Purple Cherokee and Bradley.
