What did you do in the garden today?

It's always a good day when you can get some plants from rescue like that. There is a farm / nursery that I volunteer at out here and he often will be tossing trays of this or that because it's half dead, didn't sell, scraggly etc and I'll be like, Ill take that, he kind of rolls his eyes and smirks and says have at it! Ive got totes of Kale, Mustards, Collards, you name it that way! Keep them plucked and they grow for a while. The overflow well, my neighbors like that kind of food too so I can easily give it away. I also know a few birdies who may pick at it too if I throw it in their pens as well.

Maybe that's what I should do, apply for a government grant... they have animal rescues, maybe I can run a 'plant rescue'. Worth a try, they throw money away on stupider stuff right??

Morning. Looks like we had a good frost, but I haven't been out there yet - it's too cold at 30! :gig I will start pulling the Dahlias.

If you are north of me, and have clear skies, the aurora are SCREAMING tonight!!!!
I saw pics from Maine - looks like it was a good show! I need to come visit you, lol. Nice score on the plants. My neighbor used to plant them in the ground & they came back every year.

The littles are in a good pattern now, all their food & water is outside & they have the auto door. It's nice raising chicks in the coop - never once have I had to herd them back into the coop! Just need to get them to stop sleeping in a pile in the corner eventually. I'm so glad y'all talked me into this, easiest/cheapest way to add new birds.

We didn't have to do much talking, @Sueby. 🤣

Cold out there this morning! I don't think we got as cold as they said we would, which is good. I'll take 42 over 37 any day. The five day forecast looks darn good! Mid to high 70s, which is about where I like it for puttering around. Might need a little space heater of some safe, auto-tip shutoff variety as winter progresses. Just for the really, really cold nights. I'm noticing that the rv heats up nicely, but vents that heat a little quickly for my taste.

Checked on the garden yesterday afternoon. Everything looked good and they're all getting their mature leaves going strong.

Good frosty morning to you as well. I don't know how cold it got over night here but when I finally went out to feed the chickens it was 28F. I took a bottle of hot water with me to clear up the ice in their waterers. Need to run an errand or two this morning. Plan on getting a wee bit more garden work taken care of this afternoon. Tomorrow I'm going to the Senior Center for the first time since the pandemic started. I rearranged my indoor garden this morning and now I have room for more plants. Yay! I noticed that more leaves were falling off the trees this morning after this hard frost / freeze. I'm just hoping they all come down and I can get them cleaned up before the snow starts flying. And clean my gutters. I missed the Aurora last night. I don't think I'll be able to see it anyway since my northern and western views are pretty much obstructed by very tall trees. And I'm at the bottom of a valley. Oh well, perhaps one of these nights.

So I've been reading about the fertilizer shortage they say is happening, or at least coming. Anyone have any insight? I've only read a few articles but it seems many are worried about world wide food shortages. Just curious what y'all think.

I would say it has me thinking about what I can grow indoors or in hoop houses. & it makes me glad I am adding on to the garden next spring.

I have working toward having my own seeds to plant (or seed potatoes, or whatever) for a couple years now. My tomato seed last year germinated the best of any I had.

I read this somewhere:

Those who control the food, control the population.
Those who control the seed, control the food.

With chickens, I don't need to worry about fertilizer. But what's going on.... it's scary.
