What did you do in the garden today?

Good afternoon gardeners. Today was a busy day outside, I’m pooped! I trimmed a few shrubs, planted the garlic, covered the carrot patch with bird netting and found where the ducks have been laying their eggs. We also got a lot done on the shade garden. Here are some before and after pics. I’m ordering two new pieces for the west wall but the bottom piece will be lower shade percentage and allow more air flow. Also going to do the whole door with shade as well. Before

The plan is to move to he compost pile to the other side of the veg garden and plant another small tree of some sort where that was with the big duck pool between them. Maybe another Arabian lilac since it’s a fast grower.
Keep your nails dirty and stay safe everyone!
I'm dumping and refilling duck pools everyday since we filled in the pond. Are you having the same experience or have you found a system that makes the water last longer?

I pulled the two straw bales apart and mulched the strawberry bed, the garlic, and the multiplier onions. There was half a bale left, so that went into the chicken run.

We're waiting for the leaves to finish falling, but since they're oak, it'll be a while. I hope to rake up some for the garden. I put some in the chicken run, and they have enjoyed scratching through them. That's the last thing I have planned for in the garden. Anything else will be weather and whim dependent.
Careful with excessive use of oak leaves in the garden. They acidify the soil.

I think I'm going to plant mine next to the Jerusalem artichokes and let that be just go wild with those two spreading plants.
This sounds like a great idea, sorta like Godzilla vs King Kong! We did that once with wild violets vs wild strawberries and it took 3 years but the violets finally won. That said, I might try it too! Sounds like an interesting battle. Did you use the plants for anything? We use them for fodder for the rabbits, they love them.

Finally got dirt under my nails again today, pulled more of the tomatoes and a bunch of grass and wild violets. Love the pics @igorsMistress!

I eat the Jerusalem artichokes and intend to eat the walking onions also. The JAs are nice baked or pan fried. Just eat them right away as they don't hold up well after cooked, turning very soft and mushy relatively quickly. I haven't frowning walking onions before, but plan to preserve them as pickled onions.

Hi Breeder! I’m doing the same for now. I bought some kiddie pools for this year since I don’t have a good shaded space to keep the pond liner. Hubs put a spigot and leader hose on it so I can drain and that was lasting about a week when it was in the shade. I have eight ducks now so I’m not sure how long it’ll last but I’m going to try some stuff for algae buildup in it and see if a little sun will be ok. Otherwise, we’re in the same boat. The pools are easier than a pond I think and I move them around a bit so the water goes to plants when I dump it rather than to waste.

It was first day to get my nails dirty most of the summer! Glad you got outside!
