I just received an interesting book from my husband’s ex-wife ( for Christmas). It’s called Old-Time Country Wisdom & Lore by Jerry Mack Johnson. I found these tidbits in it.

I’ve always found old time lore to be very interesting!

I tried that and didn't have great results. at the same time my mother planted whenever she had time and had a little jungle garden.

A crazy idea here... what if I removed the duck pen fencing and let them have the run of the fenced in garden? Most of my beds are raised 20-24". Onions are a short bed at just 11". The only cross planted at ground level are tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, and squash. Once the tomatoes and cucumbers are tall enough there shouldn't be any worry. Would ducks me with potatoes and squash?

my muscovy ducks ate anything they found in the garden. even eggplant and tomato leaves.

I tilled a small patch where I was dumping quail manure.

The mixed feedback and internet search results about ducks in the garden has me decided. I'm going to put a gate from the duck pen to the garden like I wanted to this Fall. Then I can let them in the garden to expand their territory under supervision. If they behave consistently under supervision, I'll consider leaving the gate open all day.

Dense freezing fog here this morning.
6 inches of snow and howling winds for tomorrow.
Nothing garden related but dreaming of NOT Winter. (although can't complain of this one)

I have my seed cart started. I forgot to add pumpkins, and I’m now remembering potatoes. I’m undecided about planting onions, carrots and garlic.

My Nana is, and my Papa was, full of old tidbits like this. They used to swear by planting and harvesting by certain signs and stages of the moon or the zodiak. They once related the story of a rancher that castrated some calves under the wrong sign and they all bled out. I used to think it was all a bunk of hokey... But as I age I begin to look at it different. I wouldn't necessarily say the stars have influence, but I might say that particular time of the year that is historically associated with a certain sign or whatnot, may be governed by different conditions than the rest of the year due to things as yet unknown.

Anyway, lol, watered the garden, it's dreary out. I'm hiding in the house and we have company. Will post a cool photo later of a cutting board DH made by hand.
