What did you do in the garden today?

Evening gardeners, and Happy New Year. It's already down to 22F and we're expected to hit 19F before the night is over. Now I hope that my plants (all frost hardy) and the frost cover are able to withstand what may very well be our coldest night of the year.

Fingers and toes crossed.
Jealous that this is your coolest night of the year. I see -9F in the forecast this week and that isn't necessarily the coolest we will get. Last year we had -50F with windchill. That was rough.

Lol, Texas is a big state @BReeder! I'm sure there's room if I you get tired of the cold. The water line supplying our rv just froze up despite running the kitchen sink. We drained the RV pipes as soon as we noticed so we don't blow any out. Now DH is trying to unhook the line and bring it in the house so in the morning it'll be thawed and ready to go. Hope it doesn't break... I can get water from dad in a pinch.

Eta I hope this is our coolest night...

dumped more chicken poop, that's all. 2 geese, 4 ducks, 2 guinea hens and 10 lakenvelder chicks left. 6 white leghorn hens and a roo came (but they stay in the same coop with the rest). I finally can work on clearing the plot and enlarge a bit my garden. still too much work as some scrap wood should be chopped for a wood stove.

We lost our dog Lily today. Here's the beautiful girl:
View attachment 2946375She was 13 YO and finding it hard to get around, falling down a lot and needing more and more help to get up, plus having more focal seizures even after increasing her medication. So we knew this time was coming sometime soon, but today she had a major seizure and it was the right time.
Her last week was really happy. She got to spend time with her former family over Christmas week - longer than we intended, family members met up at a local Air B&B and we got snowed in for several extra days - stressful for us, but the pets loved it! Lily loved playing on the beach in the snow with my niece's dog, and laying in front of the fireplace with my nephew's cat.
It seems really empty without her, and Pumpkin the kitty misses her too. Lily was the most loving and affectionate dog I've ever met. She was an angel who came into our lives right after we lost our two dogs last year.

I just heard that Betty White passed away today, too. Such a lovely and talented lady, and a huge animal lover. If there is an afterlife, Lily and Betty are the perfect partners to go there together.
I'm so sorry to hear about Lily. She was certainly beautiful and activates my "MUST PET" instinct.

Good morning gardeners. I'm enjoying another day of above freezing temps before the deep freeze moves in late tomorrow. I had started out hoping to find a four legged fur baby through a local Rescue and ended up with rescuing a vulnerable little dog from Craigs list. This poor little guy was listed as free, need to rehome. The owner was well intentioned but likely unaware that free animals listed on Craigs list are at high risk of becoming part of a puppy mill, used as a bait dog (or other animal, as this happens to other small animals listed for free), or someone's dinner. My DD came across this listing and contacted the owner and scooped him up right away. Max is about 5 years old and appears to be a Cairn Terrier / Shih Tzu mix. The poor little guy is suffering a broken heart trying to understand why his family ditched him. He is friendly and quiet and apparently likes to sleep late. He will be a fine addition to the Wee Farm. He seems very interested in the big garden and likes to "water" one of my lavender plants. LOL! He also loves the sunroom and likes to "roost" on the top of the sofa back and look out the window. That's all for gardening today. Have a great day everyone!

I was going to complain about our cold temperatures. Currently 18 but wind chill makes it 6. But have read through the posts of those of you that are much colder ! Feeling bad for the homeless and those without heat. 😞
Feeling grateful that I have both a home and working heat!
Made sure all the animals have thawed water. Plenty of food and I threw out some sunflower seeds for the chickens.
The latches on the gate were frozen! But I thawed them with a bit of water. Now they are refrozen and I can’t lock them. 🤣🤣
Stay warm my friends. I have not received any seed catalogs. 😞

Woke up to -8F with a windchill of -28'F. YUM! Well HELLO Winter. I wondered where you were.
Sad thing is, it doesn't feel cold.
Only gardening today is watering the poinsettia from last year. She looks sad. I hope she'll perk up with a pruning and a stint in the greenhouse in the spring.
Other than that the hyacinth is fully rooted in the window vase and is about an inch and a half tall this morning. Cute little thing.
