What did you do in the garden today?

This was at 7am when I got up to let the chickens out. No gardening today.

Grow Bags!! Might try some this year. But, where have you bought them? I know several people on here use them.

I am looking for grow bags to go along the east side of the extra chicken pen. Therefore I will plant those items that dont love heat there - maybe some turnips, for example (small salad ones), or maybe spinach or something else. They would get morning sun, maybe 6 hours of full sun, but not the intense afternoon hot sun. So I dont need very big ones.

Sweet Potatoes!

I'm going to order sweet potatoes. They need heat, this I know! I will buy "early" varieties to maximize my Ohio season.

Experiences in growing sweet potatoes? I will plant in a raised bed. Or I could maybe plant in a grow bag (but would be concerned about them potentially getting too dry). How deep do they grow? I know they vine out, but currently my order contains "semi-bush" and "vining" ones (but NOT the "vigorous vining" ones). I also know to try to pre-heat the growing bed using plastic, and to plant when soil is good and warm.

I love growing sweet potatoes. Skip the bags, get cheap laundry baskets/containers that you can reuse from dollar general and line with straw, and tiny hole HARDWARE cloth or you WILL get rodents in Ohio that will eat the tubers, and fill with dirt as you go up.
Sweet potatoes want consistent, DEEP watering. My grow containers for them are only 18 inches deep.

Thats probably cold for DFW, so feels especially cold. Not too bad for Ohio though!
True that. I've experienced winter in northern states, including Wisconsin (I even married a cheddar-head), but grew up in the deserts of AZ and NV...so yeah, my idea of what constitutes "cold" is as funny to y'all as what northerners call "hot" is to me. :D

Question: Do I need any kind of special bag to save my bean seeds from last year?

I saved some bean pods from last fall to harvest the seeds. I now have the seeds out of the shells and want to store them away until spring. Should they be in an airtight baggie or just a plain paper mailing envelope? Also, do I need to freeze them or anything like that? I read somewhere that some seeds need to go through a freezing cycle before they will warm up and spout.

First time I have tried saving bean seeds from a harvest, and just want to ask some basic questions. Thanks for any help.

Bean seed is easy . Envelope or baggie will work . No need to freeze . For baggie they must be dry or they will mold but yours are dry by now .

Placed an order with Baker Creek (website is rareseeds). I think this is one company that some on this thread use.
I love Baker Creek! I call their catalog garden porn. Beautiful photos.

Yeah, with big seeds like beans, mold is the only real worry. If they're totally dry, an envelope is fine.

As with all seeds, protect from mice. That can be a problem for me, so I have them in a snap-lock container.
