What did you do in the garden today?

That's both funny and sad at the same time. Funny when you look back at it, yet sad, in that we live in a world where a doctor has to ask, did you do any illegal drugs? What's even sadder is, more times than not, they automatically jump to the 'guilty' verdict without even knowing a thing about you, your background etc etc. I get it, teenagers, etc etc but not every ONE is a lying thieving drug addict.

Besides, any doctor should know that those don't start popping up in that area until April... :D :p

Ok, that last line was sarcasm, I better point that out for the Karens.

GOOD ON YOU !!! For both homeschooling AND having good kids who will grow up to be wonderful additions to society. Hopefully with gardening skills? :)

I keep a smaller garden, so I don't get overwhelmed, but my boys have always helped in the garden. And helped doing anything else I asked them to do, they don't argue about it.
They aren't always happy about it, but they don't mouth off to me. As I've always disciplined my kids from an early age, and they love me despite it. ;)
I have teenage boys, and they don't always get along, but they never put their hands on each other.
The other thing was that the doctor said Well I'm sure they don't tell you everything. I was like yes, they do. And Lord knows that I do not need to know all of that information.:lau

Do you have bird houses near your garden? We have a colony house just 15ft from the garden. It's always full of finches. The kids and I recently built another bird house that we are still finishing - needs a few coats of clear just. I'm debating if I should put it bear the garden or as far away as possible. The finches we fet back there already never bother the garden. This new house has large openings and compartments so we might get slightly larger birds. I don't want to attract something to the garden that will feast on our produce. Birds do help with insects though.

Any thoughts?

Here's a pic of the new bird house.

Anybody ever hear of planting potatoes in the Fall and letting them overwinter in the ground like garlic?

Here's an interesting article I just read that suggests the idea. This gardener is in zone 5b (same as me actually). Winter gets very cold and snowy that means for an extended period of months. I didn't think potatoes would survive the winter in the ground, but maybe...

The article also references planting onions in the Fall, something I was told not to do and thought it was odd since I am told to plant garlic and shallots in the Fall. I may try onions next Fall too then.
I just read that article. Very intriguing! I'm zone 5b too. I think next year I'm going to plant some (10?) potatoes and onions in the fall and see what happens.

Thanks for the link. I'd never heard of planting them in the fall.

I transplanted 3 trees - put them in big painting buckets. I do hope to sell my house and move to my new place this year. I will keep everything in buckets for easier transportation.
get yourself a 2 wheel dolly, you can scoop the bucket up with it tip it, and depending on the tree and it's girth / stamina, grab it's trunk to help tip the thing back on the axis to wheel it around when you need.

This is what I do in the wintertime to move all my sensitive plants into the garage when frost warnings are about. It works ok, am thinking of different ideas here as next year that papaya is going to be MUCH bigger and the ice cream banana will probably be close to 12 to 15 foot tall and not such a cooperative booger to move around. With luck I get a nanner bunch BEFORE the frost hits next season and I can just cut it down and let one of the pups take over from there !

High of 32(0'C) today and winds howling. No gardening today.
They came and filled the propane while I was taking the dog for her 6 month checkup and dental cleaning.
$1300 gone in one day
UGH
Stop at feed store for PDZ and Shredded beets...both are up a solid 25-30%. PDZ used to be 9.99 or 10.99 depending on company, today was 13.99 for the 10.99 company. other has been out of stock. :he
Meanwhile the paycheck just went 'down' again as our taxes shot up.
(This house got NO pandemic assistance, but we sure are paying for it.)
