What did you do in the garden today?

I started more seeds last night. Now I have to sit on my hands so I don’t start any more as I think the rest need to be started in March or later.
I am a bit nervous for May. We are going out to Palm Springs , CA at the beginning of May and then driving to AZ ( Phoenix ) after Mother’s Day.
I am thinking I will plant out half of my starts before I leave. That way they have a better chance of staying alive 🤞but if we get a late cold snap while I’m gone then hopefully the starts inside can replace the starts outside.
It’s tough having to depend on friends to take care of your garden while your gone. 😞🥴
They do alright with the dogs, cat, chickens and rabbits ( and now my husband added an aquarium ) but the garden has usually not fared well. St least it will be early in the season this time so I can restart if I have to.
Some people have gardening in their soul, others not so much. I hope everything fares ok while you’re gone. Be sure you bring and use sunblock, keep drinking water water water, and you might consider some oven mitts for the steering wheel if you’ll be here in May.

Thanks! I’ll be visiting my brother and his wife. They will keep reminding us to drink plenty of water and to use sunblock!
One thing we are going to do while there is take the Verde Canyon train trip. Have you done that? Apparently it’s one of my brother’s favorite things to do. My hubby is big into trains so I think it will be a great trip. 🤞

We actually had plans to go in 2020 with my folks, planned time off from and everything, but then Covid hit and my dad had had medical issues since then so we haven’t gone. Hubs and I were talking about maybe going this year but no solid plans. I’ve heard from coworkers it’s a great trip though.

I went out and checked on my starts. The first seeds to sprout came up today: a few amish paste and one yellow pear tomato. I've let the trays with white mold dry out wire a but and all surface mills is died back. I misted the surface since to provide moisture for the seeds, but hopefully keep things dry enough that the white mold underneath is choked out too. I also an keeping the domes off - I would rather have to mist regularly than have the mold make a come back. I figured out the problem also - two problems actually I believe: (1) my starter mix was not inert but had fertilizer soil included because I used what I had on hand and (2) the peat moss I used was old and possibly decomposed some. An inert starting medium is important so we don't feed things like mold and bacteria while waiting for seeds to sprout and seedlings to develop.

Well we started on stuff… relaying brick in chicken run area… this will take some time, as housing has to be moved as we go

Eventually this area will have new houses, old screening replaced with new, I want to up grade the extra fencing to metal, add some boarding along bottom as well and more… so this area is under construction and pretty big.

We started clearing out portable planting boxes, boxes in ground and cutting back the jungle…

The Papyrus is huge, hubby slashed back to it. It was surrounded by bramble. He hacked back a lot. I’ve been very ill so the garden reverted to jungle.

I started on this as well… this will take a while… this is the section still left to cut back. Black Berry

Good morning, Gardeners!
We had nice weather this past weekend, in the low 50s and no rain, so we got the new pen built for the roosters. We changed its name from "rooster jail" to "the bachelor pad" because it turned out pretty nice for them.

About 6'x60' and 5' tall with netting over the top, for three roosters. It's not as "Fort Knox" safe as the hens' coop and run, but it's relatively safe within the enclosed garden area, an apron, and the boys all have large spurs to defend themselves if necessary. After this picture was taken, we built them a roost in the middle, where no hungry predator hands can reach through.

They seem pretty happy - immediately started scratching, eating grass and hunting bugs. The two brothers stick together and stay away from the older rooster Loki, though he's showed no aggression towards them at all.

The hens seem super relieved to have all the rooster drama gone! The only one who seemed upset was the boys' mama hen, who stayed near the fence line with her eye on them. The rest settled down to dust bathe and spent quite a while relaxing in the sun.
We checked on them at night, and Loki has taken over the dog house, and the boys together on the roost.

Here's Rednar, who I mistook for a pullet. He's really small, the size of our smallest hen. Nice guy, very gentle and friendly.

Here's Charles, the one we'll probably keep. Also friendly, good-looking, bigger than Rednar but still half the size of Loki (cuckoo Marans, didn't get a good picture of him.)

They've taken well to their new job of tilling and fertilizing our asparagus bed.
