What did you do in the garden today?

Sorry if I upset some folks with my comment about southern accents. I grew up in KY, and currently have my nieces, nephews, brothers and sister scattered across TX, VA, GA and FL, as well as AZ (which is not exactly south). When I pick up the phone to talk to them, my accent starts to drift. My local family says they can tell when I am talking to southern family just by listening to me!

Do to an injury I am not able to set up my seedling rack and lights this year. Just too big and awkward to handle one handed. So my minimized # of starts are in shoe boxes this year parked in the only window that gets sun and I really really like it.

On a side note, I thought Luffa were supposed to be hard to start? These seeds are 1yr+ and they've sprouted faster then my peppers! Granted all of them got an hour soak in hot water but still! I wont be able to plant them out till almost mothers day around here!

Graced with snowfall last night with a lot of ice underneath.
It won't last. The sun angle is too high and we need every drop of moisture.

Planning on the seeding shed today. We'll see. I'd like to get this Tartan done and in the wash and in the mail. We'll see which one wins.

Planted my first seeds of the year, on my new seed workbench:

So far, 5 San Marzano tomatoes, 5 Sungold tomatoes, 10 red ball cabbage, 5 leeks, 5 luffa. They're over a heat mat, and I'll turn on the grow lights as soon as they sprout.

Is that a repurposed mail tray I see there? They make excellent seed trays!

magpies around the coop? I thought my chickens didn't lay till one day I didn't collect the eggs when I saw them and by the time I went to close the coop all the eggs were gone.

I doubt it. The coop is within the run, the run is fenced, although a wild bird could still enter, but isn’t likely to enter. The coop is closed except for the pop door, and all vents are securely covered with wire. It’s just weird bc I do t see any evidence of egg eating right now, and this time of year the free loaders have already begun to lay.

We have 9 hens and 3 roosters (two of them youngsters) and our egg production went up dramatically three weeks ago when we built a new pen for the 3 roosters and separated them from the hens. There was no real fighting or overmating, but definitely too much drama, territorial behavior, etc. The hens became so much more relaxed with the roosters gone! Their egg production increased a lot, partly due to Spring I'm sure, but they were definitely happier with the roosters elsewhere.

We definitely will get rid of 1 male, maybe 2. Having one in the flock isn’t an issue, so we will keep the one with the girls. We have a separate pen, but, might be using it for raising male Plymouth Rocks for meat.

True, but no high production hens in our flock. Also, the oldest four have only just turned 4 years old.

I acquired 6 when a new boss ordered "better" ones and wanted the old ones disposed of.
