What did you do in the garden today?

@Sueby it means a non commercial flock. Apparently the poultry in our backyards aren’t poultry 🙄

Afternoon all. Went to see my dad today. For my sake I’m hoping to see him again Thursday, but for his sake I hope I don’t. Blah. Now I’m laying on my bed screwing around and getting loved by my fur baby. I’m going to have a shot of Jack to take the edge off and watch the local news for weather, then put on something mindless and read for a while. Have a good night.

I told the poor lady that called me the same thing! I finally saw a post on social media about it last week - I told her there should be much more info out there & she agreed. But also told me she was retiring (as are any State of CT employees that are eligible) come April.

ETA: this is HPAI, by the way.
That’s more information than I found. So thank you.

None in Texas yet by that chart, but migratory birds happen and it's only a matter of time. I don't have space to let my birds free-range anyway, but this is just more incentive to keep them safely in an enclosed run. We have at least three other people on the street that keep birds (in dismal states at that) so I'm not keen on the chance of them mixing with mine to begin with.

Plus, because everybody around here let's their chickens wander and they aren't careful with the feed, we've got a surplus of large, fat pigeons. And mice.

@igorsMistress I feel your pain. :hugs My mom is in a convalescent home right now too. I'm scared to visit because I'm immunocompromised, I won't take off my mask & she is deaf so wearing a mask is just redic. It's a big mess. (eta: made a big fat cocktail for myself too 🍻)
I totally understand your concern over the mask. I’m sorry you’re not able to visit your mom, that’s gotta be hard :hugsI wore my mask until I was in dads room, but this is a group home so not much of a crowd. I hope things ease up and you can visit with your mom soon.

@Wee Farmer Sarah - I looked & found only 2 cases of it in MA, & those were both in migrating canada goose - no backyard infections or ducks or anything & those were near the shore/cape, Barnstable. How'd Mass get so lucky when CT has like 30+ cases? LOL NH has 52!

I’m getting the feeling that it’s being under reported here. I’m not sure. I just want to know my chickens are safe. I’m a little concerned that I suspect my neighbor is feeding the wild turkeys and they are foraging in their yard where their chickens are. It’s not good to have them mingle in their droppings.

I wonder too. I know CT is actively looking for it, hunters are reporting it, etc - maybe not so much in MA? Or maybe the migrators stop in CT for a rest & then fly right over MA? I laugh at myself, I complained to the Dept of Ag lady about the neighbors feeding the birds/turkeys/bears etc & told her that they should do more to educate. :gig

@igorsMistress thanks. I'm surprised they aren't more strict at the group home where your Dad is. But I guess this is CT & all nursing home type places are locked up tight here. I had to show proof of vax, booster (original, no copies or pics) AND fill out a digital form (which I somehow set off the alarm & they tried to kick me out, lol). We were in Moms room & my sister took her mask off so she could communicate with Mom & they came in & yelled at her. I hate COVID. & CT. :lau Been one of those days here.
