What did you do in the garden today?

Reminds me of a commercial I seen long ago for some sort of sanitizer or something. Shows a dog licking his ...... then drinking from the toilet.... then eating the garbage... then owner gets home WOOFY !!! and the dog ls licking all over her face.....

Oh and please do yourself a favor, do NOT go looking for that commercial on youtube, if you do I am NOT responsible for what pops up.......

When DH was young, he was instructed to throw out some leftovers that had gone bad in the fridge. (his parents were wannabe country people) He tossed the leftovers at the property line instead of out in the wilderness... and their dog found it, and ate it, and Mt. St. Helens, as Ascholten so eloquently put it, erupted from both ends before the day was over.

I think everybody learned a valuable lesson.

I will remind myself of this fact anytime my brain says "Oh! cute puppy!!!" Because no. I have cats, they are more than enough. Lol!

Watered the garden, did chicky chores. Radish are coming up really good and I think and hope tonight is our last potential frost. They're saying high of 90 on Monday, which is wild, because our last official frost date is the 30th. Which... is also wild to me because in Colorado the last frost date was about Mother's Day.

I tasted some of the kale that overwintered and I'm not thrilled. Probably going to rip them out and plant some more with a shade cloth in mind in the near future. Honestly, I probably need to plan out and set up a section of the veggie garden that is heavily shaded with a shade cloth overhead if I hope to get any cool crops. It's soooo hot here.

Raw or cooked? I have some that was pretty bitter, but once cooked it tamed down tremendously. Same with some mustards that got a bit older and ... mustardier.

Don't give up on them yet, try cooked and see if they are stomachable. If not, then maybe the girls will eat them. I know mine ate the hell out of radish plants I put in there, go figure!

Oh, this is quite nerdy but I couldn't help myself... 😂 I saw these hand towels and had to get them.

Well my “ putting off what needs to be done” came back and bit my with a vengeance 😞
I knew a section of fence between the dog yard and the chicken run was weak. Some of the poles snapped off at the bottom and the fence was leaning in a lot. I had even take a heavy duty pole out there to shore it up but couldn’t get it in the ground without the pounder. I just hadn’t gotten around to taking the pounder out there.
I let the dogs out like usual this morning and then sat and relaxed at the kitchen table. After an hour or 2, maybe even 3, I realized that the dogs hadn’t knocked on the door to comeback in. So I went to call them in. They weren’t in their yard. You guessed it. They were in the chicken yard. 😞
I never heard any of the chickens or the rooster make any commotion. The dogs came when I called them and I had to unlock the gate to let them out. They have never come out of the chicken yard voluntarily before, so I think they had been in there a while.
I had to put down 2 chickens. 1 was just approaching point of lay and had made the bad choice to fly over from the other chicken yard. The other was an older Barred Rock. I thought the rooster was dead too but he was up and walking around when I got back out there from locking the dogs up. We will see how he does. There are 2 other older hens that I’m not sure how injured they are. 1 is hiding up under the coop and I can’t get to her. The other one came in the coop at lock up.
Needless to say, I got out there and not only installed several heavy duty poles I also installed cattle panels over the field fence ( or hog fence?) that was already up.
I feel like I am as much to blame as the dogs are.
So, don’t be like me, go mend those fences.

Oh no! Oh, I'm so sorry! 😕 It's really sad and regrettable but I hope you don't beat yourself up too badly. You can only do what you can do. Everyone gets tired and needs a break. Nothing can change what's been done so best to just move forward.

As to what happened in the garden today? Found the next town over, just a few miles away, keeps a "compost yard" going. Scuttlebut says they only give the compost free to their citizens. Called them and was told "come on down and get all you want". Seem as they get a lot more "waste" material than they give away compost. So I got as much as my pick-up would handle. One 40' flower bed alongside the driveway looks good now. Gonna take a few more loads to do all of what I need to do.. More flower beds, garden, pots. Lots of compost here!

Note: after driving 60 miles round trip to buy Some Ichiban eggplant seedlings yesterday, I found our local Wallyworld had them in stock today. Just my luck! Feel a little better about the trip as the nursery I bought from yesterday is locally grown where WM is Bonnie, not from around here.

Another note: Had to go back to WM as I found one of my hummingbird feeders was broke and hummers were being sighted in our area. It's that time folks!

You DO know this is not over right?
The bacteria from that thing is ravaging that dog's gut as we speak.
Give it to the end of the day and that dog is not going to pinch a coil, it's going to Mt. St. Helens somewhere. Might want to make sure when doggy whines to go out, you accommodate PROMPTLY ! Might take a day or so to settle things out but remember, dogs dig up dead stuff and eat it too, so doubtful rover is going to be too bad off.

my dogs ate unhatched eggs that were sitting for a couple of months waiting to be buried in the garden. nothing happened.

sounds like when I paid ferry boat tickets and benzine to go to athens to buy some antiparasit biscuits for dogs and paid 19 eur each while the local feed store was selling them for 12 eur:he
