What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning all. Fortunately I don’t have to lock my chickens down for now. I do check the APHIS site at least twice a day now. Made some progress on the split rail fence yesterday. I got the first post hole dug before I had to chase a few of my chickens back into the chicken yard. They snuck out through a small opening in the fence at the compost pile. Naughty girls. The digging wasn’t too horribly rocky, but slow going. I’m hoping to get another one or two dug before the rain moves in this afternoon. We are expected to have a hard freeze for two nights then hopefully the weather remains above freezing after that. I would like to get the onion sets in the ground within the week. That and the plastic covered hoops set up.

Supposed to rain on & off today & then get very cold for the next few nights. I will cover the strawberries. Some stupid tree rat (I assume) tore up my onion beds. & my walking onion bed that was covered! I have no idea how he got in there. Man do I hate when squirrels go looking for long gone acorns.

@WthrLady if I remember you have quite a nice coop & run, how many birds do you have right now? Sorry you had to lock them up but better safe than sorry is how I'm feeling about it. It's harder on me than the birds I think. (& I mean literally harder, more work)

Yes, thank you, 350 Sq feet of coop and run- they have plenty of space 23 birds out there, with climbing frames, ladders, swings and toys to poke and peck at. (#24 has a private suite in the workshop) They know it's nice and warm out and can start to see the green grass poking out. So they're ready to stretch out. Last night at egg collection I had two tugging on the hem of my skirt and being chatting and whining. I told them they couldn't go out and to blame their party hearty southern cousins who went south for the winter and licked doorknobs.

I know it's the sparrows that have it and are passing it to the mega farms. The song birds came back last week and boom, mega farm down. Last night at dusk, we had a flock of migrating robins. OMG it was 500 strong ! It flew over the house, circled the barn and landed in the pasture. It was insane! I've never seen the returning flock so large in years. So yes, I'm glad the girls are locked up.

@Wee Farmer Sarah I'm hoping these next few days of super cold are the last of it. I'd like to get my beans in under the hot house after that & get some herbs out in the new herb beds. & I have grass seed to plant.

I got 2 cattle panels up on the 2 new beds, they're perfect. I had to cut 4 sections of the bottom because they were just a little too tall to manage but those 4 sections are perfect pepper trellises! Makes me want to cut up a cattle panel in smaller sections just for smaller trellises. We'll see how much light everything gets, there should be enough room in between all the beds that they're ok. South is to the right, east is top in the pic & they get full sun all day. & that's the strawberry beds at the very bottom - maybe 2.5-3 feet between the beds.

ETA: oh, got the rhubarb moved. I'm kinda mad, only 1 of the 3 plants I bought last year made it. They weren't cheap & have a warranty but of course I can't find the receipt.

Well... We got the rock put down in the gap between my field fence and the privacy fence next door! Now this area won't be overgrown with weeds and puking it's seeds and scrub into my garden! I also grow grapes, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries along that fence so this will allow me to harvest from both sides of the fence!

DH got the truck stuck in the yard in the process of moving stone and tore a HUGE section of the yard all to hell. It's a muddy, mucky swamp. I tried to cross it and sank up past my ankles... Good thing I had rain boots on! DH thinks he's going to be able to rake it back smooth.... Good luck with that! We will have to end up dumping soil on it to fill it in.... How much do you want to bet?

Ok....I feel really dumb right now. I just learned that runner beans are a perennial plant. I didn't know that.... Now I gotta re-think where I'm going to plant them.

I heard that before, pretty much everyone here grows them as annuals though, probably because of climate. I would love to grow them as perennials, I was going to look into that, thanks for jogging my memory.

My zinnias and giant sunflowers have started coming up in my greenhouse . No sign of my tomatoes yet though , I sowed them two weeks ago.

I heard a few people talking about Egyptian Walking Onions.
Down here in Fl I am told it's a pretty 'exotic' or hard to get plant.
needless to say, I managed to get one, am going to plant it and see if I can get it to propagate and get more off it.

Picked up a weaving job that needs done by the morning of the 4th. OMG !
Raced into town for supplies, while there grabbed onion sets and a green onion tape. I'll plant those on the other side of the hoop house away from the peas and potatoes.
