Well today I went out to check on the garlic, several have scrapes which I had to take off and some, not sure what to call it, I guess they are scrapes but never seen them this way before, it's like an explosion of smaller twigs out the top of the thing. Anyways, I nibbled on some of the scrapes, because they said they make a good snack. They do!! It's a nice garlic flavor, in a green, but not so harsh like the clove would be.

OMG !! I am going to smell like this for DAYS !! Vampires won't be around here I guaranTEE that!!

Yes, I hope everyone is ok with the awful weather out in the middle of the country!

Supposed to be a bit warmer today, will get above freezing. 🙄 I'll probably be able to uncover the strawberries & onions tomorrow. Hopefully for the last time. I'll make the girls a mash today, it'll be nice that it won't be an instant ice block. All but one are laying regularly but the BLRW is a total slacker. :gig She is the biggest bird but lays the tiniest little eggs, when she even lays!

So far it's just been windy with nothing much to show for it. We are under a severe storm risk and tornado watch. However, the rain is about to start in earnest in the next hour. Most of the bad, bad weather will hit east of here along the Arkansas/Mississippi line. If anyone around here is in Mississippi, I will pray for you! :fl
 
Knowing that animal feed is going to be WAY more expensive and harder to get, I've been trying to prep for it. I'm moving my animals to a fermented feed which should, in theory, help them eat less. Is anyone doing this? Just curious how your setup works...

Anyway, I also bought some seed create a feed plot - millet, oats, spring wheat, buckwheat, and amaranth. I just haven't been able to figure out WHERE to put it. I have so many huge oak trees that cast shadows. Also live on the side of a foothill so the soil is rocky in most places. Then there's the animals....all available pasture (4 acres) is used for horses so I'll have to make sure to keep horses, goats, chickens, and deer out of it. Well....I *think* I finally figured out how to solve my dilemma.

I have some galvanized metal raised flower beds up by our house which sit right along the pasture fence line. I'm wondering if I can get DH to till a 5 ft wide swatch on the pasture side of that fence that extends about 20-25 ft... I'd have to install some temporary fencing to block it off so the animals couldn't get in there....but being up closer to the house would allow me to keep an eye on it, water it easier, and ensure the animals aren't getting into it. The only downside is I'm sure DH will complain about the tilling and potentially about the aesthetics which will block his view of our pond. Plus, the soil in that area is generally pretty sorry. It's rocky and bedrock is only 2 ft down. I'll definitely need to add some compost to amend the soil.

*sigh* I wish I had more land to leverage for an honest feed plot.
