What did you do in the garden today?

WINDY !!!!! Ridiculously windy.. mowed about half of my place then I dressed the heirloom maters and hilled what’s left of the taters, planted an apple tree for my oldest grandson, scratched up a few beds for some squash and planted some zucchini, yella straight and yella crook neck.. and that 34° tomorrow night is now a 42°... but I’m not chancing it I’ll cover all my tender plants in the ground just to be safe.. hope y’all had a goodun wherever y’all are at and have a pleasant evening..

Same here with the wind. I really need to spray the apple trees. Not happening today, unfortunately. I have also pretty much confirmed that the Granny Smith is indeed dead from whatever attacked it last fall when I had Covid and couldn't take care of it. A silver lining is that there is a small shoot coming up from the bottom of the dead tree. I can't tell if it is a sucker from the root ball or a water sprout. Either way, I think I'll let it continue to grow. What do I have to lose? It is a big bummer though because it will take at least 2 years for that little shoot to grow to the size of the tree that died.

If it’s coming from below the original graft knob it will likely not be a Granny Smith tree. That happened to my Cortland apple tree when it died. It’s best just to remove it and get another tree.

I did that one year with cattle panels. Worked a dream. But since DH and DS are the only potato eaters, I just shoved 5 whole seed potatoes in the hoophouse this year. Nothing fancy, what comes up comes up.
HOWLING 55 mph winds all night slept rocky, woke up to a 911 text from sister 900 miles away. Dad was having a heart attack, off to the hospital, off to another for a heart specialist, triple bypass in the works. Sigh. I'm a jittery mess, but not worried about him, what is, is. But I can't straight up anxious for the morning wake-up, the house shaking with the wind isn't helping, and the furnace guys are coming in half an hour to work on the ductwork all day. Be still my nerves.
I need to update the watering on the starts. The air is so dry this time of year.

And in nonsensical news: my order from Gurneys was shipped from a location about 45 miles away from me via FedEx. It is now in another state, about 200 miles away…..

Yeah, I'll likely just buy another tree. We've changed our chicken yard plans anyway and keeping this tree where it is could cause problems later. Better to just remove it and start over.

Here's a picture of the base. There's actually 2 new shoots, not 1. You can also see some sort of fuzzy mold on the base. There's some leaf litter which could have caused it but it doesn't bode well for the tree.
