What did you do in the garden today?

Good afternoon gardeners. I checked on the comfrey, definitely need some compost and mulch. I might get out the gallon grow bags and put them in those, but for now they’re in the shade garden. This weekend I’m going to transplant the borage and take out the rosemary and lavender. I might give that area some time to recover and just put some compost in until fall. I never made it over to HD last weekend for soil in the big garden so have to get that done and I think I’m going to reuse the rabbit pen as an enclosed keyhole garden. Not exactly the right shape, but you get the idea. If I grow stuff vertically in there and add some shade I think it would be perfect. That’s it for me and the boys should be home soon. Time for chores, have a good night all.

I’m past ready for some homegrown veggies, going thru some old pictures

Cold, windy. Damp bc it rained most of the day yesterday. Wasn’t weather for any gardening. We did receive raspberry cuttings from a relative. So we lugged an unfilled raised bed to a corner of the large garden plot, put in soil, put in raspberry cuttings, then more dirt. We will relocate them later this year, but with spouse’s surgery and still on crutches, it will be awhile before a raised bed will be made.

Same for the rhubarb -it’s on its way. Ultimately it will be planted in a raised bed, but for now I’ll have to get some large pots for the rhubarb for now. I think that should be ok- I’ve never heard rhubarb is finicky about being transplanted. Anyone know?

Thoughts on potential invasive plants being sold (seed packets in the store or plants)? My order from Gurneys included “chocolate plant” which is a vining plant that I was going to plant along the compost bin. While I looked up a bit of info before I ordered it, I didn’t do enough research. Apparently it is an invasive plant in 2-3 states that border Ohio. So, Ohio does not call it invasive …yet. Yeah, I’m not going to plant it, but irritated that it was even an option.

Would love to know what varieties of tomatoes you are growing...

These are the varieties I picked this year. Never had any of them before except Roma. Curious if you have tried any and what your thoughts are...

Prairie Fire
Blue Cream
Sart Roloise
Black Strawberry
Roma
San Marzano

Your pictures looked like maybe you had Prairie Fire and Blue Cream?

I’ve grown Roma and San Marzano several times but I don’t grow paste tomatoes any longer, my favorite sauce tomato is Amish Paste..
this year I’m growing 19 varieties of heirlooms.. I’ve grown as much as 57 varieties one year that was a busy season. I’ve never heard of prairie fire or blue cream, I used to grow the old school OSU Blue, before there was an Indigo Rose/indigo Apple (same tomato just renamed) and before Matt’s Wild Cherry varieties and even Wild Boar Farms.. I’m growing a few of my favorites again this year in Giant Black, Speckled Roman, Cream Sausage and Banana Legs.. and Abe Lincoln, Brandywine Yellow, Pineapple, Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Beef Steak, Black Cherry, Pink German, Boxcar Willie, Rapunzel, Red Cherry, Sweet 100, Mortgage Lifter, and Lemon Boy are the ones I started from seed this year..
