What did you do in the garden today?

I am beyond excited because my garden started today! I woke up to see a whole bunch of little sprouts from my strawberry and basil seeds. Last year all but one of my strawberry plants died so this is so exciting for me.

Also heard sprinkling cinnamon in the dirt with the sprouts will help prevent that nasty mold that kills them. The first time I heard of that was this spring. I already sprinkled some on yesterday. So far nothing has happened to the sprouts or the mold.
Thoughts on that anyone?

Cinnamon is a potent spice. I've never heard of using it to prevent mold growth, but it wouldn't surprise me. Mold tends to like damp conditions, and I was under the impression that cinnamon is a very drying spice. In traditional medicine, it's considered hot and dry to be precise.

ETA: it's fairly cheap so... why not I guess?

I'm weeks behind. Not reading all that. But here's what's happening in the garden:
- garlic is up
- walking onions are up
- shallots are up
- red barron and stuttgarder onions for planted today
- tomato seeds were resowed and should be up any day
- bell pepper seeds resowed and should be up any day
- there's progress on the new flower beds along the garden fence:got the landscape timber edging installed, bark chips down, planted korean feather grass transplants and valentine bleeding heart bareroot starts. I also placed two small statues.

I need to finish restarting seeds since the fungus attacked my initial starts. I also need to plant the potatoes and 6 asparagus roots I picked up recently.

So much work, but so little time to do it all. Work is very busy, and the remodel project I'm working on on the side takes the majority of my "free" time. Days are getting longer though and the weather more bearable so I'm hoping to get caught up in the garden soon.

Very late Happy Birthday! Sheesh, falling behind in the posts is murder

I just gave away a few dozen eggs, its just me, so i can't keep up but I'm considering cracking the excess into ice cube trays and freezing them... not sure if that will work?

I'll find out this winter, I froze a couple ice cube trays of beaten eggs. Of course I'll have to remember which freezer I put them in and find them first.

I'll drain the water off to use as tea, and then let it do it's normal thing.

I wonder if that would work with the tea I make from the comfrey and borage? I haven't decanted the last 3 buckets from Fall and it'll be a while before I have enough for another batch. Worth a try, normally the smelly sludge just goes into the compost bin.

Instead I step on a nail while building a brooder, and then the 1st real thunderstorm of the year rolled through. .

I know it's been a while, but how's your foot? Did you need a tetanus shot?

(Try to ignore all the dog toys everywhere.... They are worse than toddlers! As soon as I pick up after them, they drag it all out again! )

Penny has her toy box as well and if I could get her to put her toys back I'd be so happy.

and some celery in my greenhouse. Didn't have any luck with the celery last year so , I'm open to any tips.

I've grown celery both from seed and starts and it just becomes mostly leaves and what stalks I do get are pretty bitter. That said, I still grow it since our bunnies LOVE it, that and parsley are probably their favorites.

I know it's been a while, but how's your foot? Did you need a tetanus shot?

Thanks for asking. No, no tetanus though I probably should have. My last one was fall 2020 so technically upto date. It took acouple weeks to heal, bad location, and has left me with a dime sized ball of scar tissue under the skin. Fun times.

I was able to get a new, 3x15, section de-sodded (is that a word?), turned, compost added and turned again in the last couple days. This bed will be for raspberries and blackberries, covered with black plastic for a couple weeks until my bare roots come.

Started hardening goji and BlackBerry cuttings with leaves, but they will be coming in as the next 3 days will be cold and wet and maybe snow.

Onion sets are in, rhubarb is up and I have some walking onion seeds to plant, not sure if it is too early yet or not? got 3 in ground potato hills done and started 2 chicken wire towers for potatoes too (never done them before)

Took off weed barrier (from previous owner) in one more new bed this weekend, finished up yesterday. It is partial shade and next to the house so hoping to turn it into an edible garden of herbs and similar. Need to level out and add some compost! Mulch will be expensive but necessary and it will need to be edged.

@Wee Farmer Sarah - well take it easy woman! Things don't heal like they did when we were 20.

I have the Todt trial going on in the background - not sure if anyone has heard of it but he is the physical therapist that murdered his wife, 3 kids & even the dog & then blamed the wife. Who was dead. He was my physical therapist for my 2nd shoulder surgery so I'm interested in it.

I remember hearing about that, so creepy! I would be interested if I was that close to it. I’ve been keeping an eye on the Lori Vallow case. She has been declared competent for trial. I hope the authorities throw the book at her and it hurts.

Been pouring down all night hard...yesterday wasn't this heavy a rains. Got another day of this I'm afraid and I have 13 babies in lockdown and lights just flickered! Ugh
Between the fragile kale I planted and all the seeds I'm not sure the straw will be able to save em from this heavy and long a rains!
How on earth did people survive back then when they didn't have grocery stores with as much food available as we do currently?

red barron and stuttgarder onions for planted today

I have a pound each of sets for those to put in. I'm thinking about planting some now (this week, anyway) and some at a later date.

My Egyptian Walking Onions have regrown greens, from where the deer browsed them down to the ground. I fixed the garden fence, so hopefully, they keep the bleep out of my garden! When we run out of onions, I'll be digging some EWOs up. There are some that walked out of the bed, so they can be harvested.

Garlic is up as well.

We have another day and a half of nice, and then the bottom falls out. The temps crash, the storms roll in, and we have 5-6 nights of around to slightly below freezing. At least all the buds on the fruit trees are still tight and no flowers out yet.
