What did you do in the garden today?

For next year: does anyone use a tool to plant small seeds?
I'm thinking of getting one, but I don't know if it's worth it or a gimmick.

I mix small seeds with dirt then sow them. old school and simple. as I keep losing tools it means less headache and waste of time, lol.

Fruit tree Q: We planted a peach tree a few weeks ago. Peach trees don’t like to be in very wet areas is what I’ve read. With the 3.5 days of rain, the dirt around the base is quite wet. It is an area that gets pretty wet when it rains and stays wet longer than some other areas, but not standing water.

Should we build a raised bed for it, so that it is planted higher than it is now? This would require digging it up again -trying to be careful of the roots.

Should we wait and see? But then we lose a year of possible growth.

My peach tree is planted in an area similar to that. There are also blueberry bushes on the edge of my neighbors yard about 10 feet away. The only thing I use on it are the ashes from my pellet stove, and spray with neem oil. The tree is doing quite well. Last summer was the first harvest (the tree was 3 years old). Peach trees, at least mine, love a good drink of water. If the tree looks happy, then it’s doing fine.

Good morning gardeners. Had to sleep in the recliner last night, can’t breathe laying down I was up early though lol. It’s still dark outside it’s pretty breezy, but the temperature is pleasant. I watered the hell out of the fruit trees and wet down all the straw around them, watered the grass and a few other things. Other than a trip to the park soon for the dogs I’m not going back outside again today. Still congested and tight in my chest so having a breathing treatment now before we leave. Need to remember to have hubs hang my dads Korean War flag too. Have a great day all and remember your fallen veterans today, they’re what this holiday is all about!

Good morning gardeners. Still plugging away at yard clean up. I really need to get some work done in the gardens today. The potatoes are a foot or more tall already so I need to get the dirt moved around them. Lots of little weeds. The good news is I need to thin my first planting of kale so there’s fresh greens to be had from that. Also have red leaf lettuce that needs picking. What a “terrible” problem to have. Lol! The romaine lettuce is finally growing well. Hoping for everything else to continue doing well. Regarding citrus trees. I have a Meyer lemon and a Mandarin orange tree. I’ve always kept them in my sunroom because of the climate here. This year I put them out in the covered porch so they can enjoy the summer but are protected from squirrels and chipmunks. There are 3 or 4 oranges growing now and 2 lemons on that tree. I’m hoping the outdoor “feel” will help the little trees produce this year. Fingers crossed . Have a great day everyone.

Mine too, a geothermal one will likely never happen but a basic greenhouse has to!

Today we are supposed to have 2 rounds of storms, so we will see if there is any gardening to be done. Kids are still asleep so I am enjoying some coffee, fresh breeze and me time.

I would LOVE a pomegranate tree, fig tree or dragon fruit!

On my way to check the progress of my new strawberry bed -- where things look great, BTW -- I discovered that the poppies planted here by the previous property owner are showing their first blooms of the season, right on cue for Memorial Day. I have my own Flanders Field!

I carpet bombed the whole garden with this stuff yesterday. This morning I found fresh tracks in it from our nightly visiting doe, but it appears that she didn't eat anything this time...so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Just to clarify if anyone is offended by my reference to Flanders Field; I have been made aware that some might not interpret it in the way I meant. I did not mean it as disrespectful.

There are many veterans, living and dead, in my family.

I was truly moved that the poppies opened on Memorial Day, a reminder of the veterans who served and died. My father was a wounded Korean War veteran and I although I am not able to return to my hometown, I am proud that his name is etched on the memorial wall there.

Pomegranates are easy to grow from seed. They sell them to the store in the fall. I've got 3 growing from seeds I harvested from store bought fruit. This is their 2nd year.
