What did you do in the garden today?

Harvested the first lettuce heads for salad tonight! They were a bit small but very close to another head so it should give the others more space! I usually grow leaf lettuce only, first time with romaine and it is looking good! :wee

Watered everything this morning also, especially the 4 groups of pole beans I planted yesterday. Added a few more marigold plants to the corners of a few raised beds. Sprinkled some worm castings around everything that needed a little “umph” before I watered. Finally ended by planting more Swiss chard and some beets in an empty section of one of the raised beds. Still waiting for my cukes & squash to get true leaves before transplanting in the garden. So many tomatoes and even a pepper or two have flowers! It seems super early for that!

Its hot out there! But also breezy at times, so its bearable!

We have 8 fruit trees now. They are in a line down the driveway to the barn. two are 2 years old, Four are 1 year old and the last two were planted a few weeks ago. The older ones (6) all had major grass and weeds around them, so I've been digging the top layer up, adding a mixed garden soil on the top few inches to replace what was removed with all the grass and weed roots, then adding mulch. Two more to go tomorrow.

Tomatoes that are purple! Several toms are turning purple and a couple with yellowing leaves. This is a deficiency. So, I bought some young plant fertilizer (its meant for just transplanted or young plants), and watered them in. I also found some tomato spikes - quite small, but followed directions and the worst looking ones got the recommended 2 spikes per plant, but some only got one spike. Both of these fertilizers provide a slightly higher level of the phosphorus, and the purple leaves indicate a lack of phosphorus I believe. Hopefully they begin to look better. Most of the ones that look bad are the ones I bought from a farm store, so their starter medium must have been different than last year bc usually their items look great and do well!

Any idea whats wrong with my cucumbers?

Sometimes the cool temperatures can make it difficult for the plants to absorb nutrients. That’s where some epsom salts might help them with absorbing nutrients. These temperature fluctuations are a bit of a challenge this season Today our high was 85F, Wednesday the high will be in the high 50’s. If you think it’s a phosphorus deficiency, bone meal should help with that. Mother Nature is always challenging us.

This is us too, lows back in the 40s this week after today being 90! I have been needing to give extra nutrition and did some Epsom salt too.

I only do leaf lettuce here, just easier. Harvested some lettuce, trimmed some onions tops and got a couple radishes. Blueberry flowers are falling off and I think I see some berries;)
