What did you do in the garden today?

Anyone ever grown broccolini? I bought a couple of plants from Lowes about a month ago. They are planted in the hoop house. I can't seem to keep them from bolting. I know that broccoli flowers are edible and even taste like broccoli.... but I've been trying to get these plants to actually look like this:

But I can't get it to look that "beefy." Instead they are super leggy with only a few sprouts which ultimately flower instead of getting "beefier." Does that makes sense? lol...

if you plant them in july they will flower when temperature drops.

The plants are in the garden, so the pressure is off. Now I just have to stay on top of things so they don't get out of hand. :)

DH has ideas on how to improve the fencing. Lot of work and money involved, of course, because it will be a lot of fence. We're thinking a vertical apron (buried fence) along the perimeter to deter the diggers. We can do this in the sandy soil garden, but no way could we do that in the clay.

We have lot of odd pieces of metal roofing. I was wondering about using that instead of fencing. It would help stop the grass from coming in (BIG help to me!), and get rid of the odd pieces of metal at the same time. And since we have it, no cost. I think it would be easier to get in the ground than fencing too. Has anyone done this?

The only down side would be having to cut the metal into usable pieces. DH has an angle grinder, so maybe it's possible?

Sounds like a lot of us are in maintenance mode on the gardens! I do want to stick a couple more kabocha squash seeds in the ground, they had a poor germination rate & I only have 1 plant at this point, I'd like 1 or 2 more. I'm hoping I like them.

I'm excited to have all the squash & cukes growing on cattle panel hoops, I hope it works out well. It's my first time growing them that way so it's all an experiment & we'll see if I planted too many. Probably, I always stuff as much in as I possibly can!

The slugs are eating my bean plants, I need to put out another trap for that. But despite them, most of the beans are climbing now. The bush beans aren't doing well after the heat & I might pull them & plant some rutabaga instead, the bush beans hurt my back to harvest. & it's good timing to plant rutabaga.

Good morning gardeners. We got nearly another 1/4 inch of rain early this morning. And an additional quarter inch in the forecast for tonight. It’s really soggy outside. I’m really hoping the grass dries out enough to mow by Saturday. I did get more weeding done this morning. I realized the onion bed was full of clover and the bunnies around here love clover. All cleaned up now. As expected, the potato plants I piled dirt around seemed to have grown another 6 inches. Saturday looks hopeful for spraying my peach tree again. It’s full of baby peaches and it would be nice to get peaches two years in a row. I finally put my 3 year old impatiens outside this morning too. They got pretty tall this winter so I need to prune them. Today I’ll be shampooing my carpets. What fun. I may get motivated to wash the living room drapes too. We’ll see. Have a great day all.
