What did you do in the garden today?

Upper 70s and 80s over the next week, no rain in sight. Watered yesterday so I will water tomorrow. Need to get out there and weed and add some more pine needles to the edible garden. Picked the last of the rhubarb today, will let the rest go for now and have let the last few stalks of asparagus grow out too, cant get more if I dont let some seed. Some spinach and lettuce should be ready to pick today or tomorrow. Still picking flowers off strawberries though I would love to leave them ;)

Enjoy the day all and get dirty!

Rain today, yay! We didn't get much the last time, so I'm hoping we get at least a good 1/4" and 1/2" would be better.

All my tomato plants are looking good and green. They didn't get a lot of time to harden off, so they doing well in spite of that. I bury them deep, and they are still short, but I'm sure they're developing roots along the stem and will take off soon.

Except for losing a lot of strawberry plants to the deer, I'm quite pleased with how everything is going. I'll get a few berries, so what's there is showing me some love. :love

I feel... dumb? I guess about not figuring out the pH issue with the blueberries a long time ago. We might get a cupful, but they're going on 5-6 years now, so that's pitiful. I'm just thankful they didn't say see ya later, we're out of here, and die. They all got a nice sip of whey last night. I have a reason to make a lot of yogurt now: Making whey for the blueberries! I measured the acidity before I poured it on the plants, and the whey was pH 5.5, so a nice treat.

I'll be cutting garlic scapes in the next few days. :drool

Planning to plant the 2 artichoke, 2 zucchini and 2 yellow squash plants. Got a yard of raised bed mix delivered yesterday so I can fill the new "herb garden" on the deck, move the 3x3x1 "self watering" RB I put together yesterday out in the garden. Will plant carrot seeds in that. And I have another one to put together but is it ground level RB, not on legs like the other 2.

Especially with not putting drainage holes in the bottom and instead on the side to create a water reservoir in the bottom.
Just a portion of the soil on the bottom is used to wick water up in wicking tubs. The filler pipes in this video creates a water reservoir and allows excess water to drain. I have been experimenting with other material like rocks, and colanders.

Use an old plastic rain barrel like the boy did to stagger holes all the way around for the strawberry plants. Inside the barrel, I'd place a circular "basket" of hardware cloth. Inside the basket, I'd fill it with logs, wood chips, etc. The basket serves to hold the wood in place in the center of the barrel. Then I'd put soil/compost in the "donut" area. Watering the tower would consist of wetting down the wood in the inner basket really well.

Thoughts? Opinions? Did I explain it well enough? I just have to figure out where to get an old plastic barrel like that....
I like the idea, it would probably help, but gravity would still make the woody material wetter at the bottom...maybe do this, but also put a PVC pipe in the very center, with holes drilled only partway down? Just shooting in the dark, because I've never tried this...
I see plastic barrels like this all the time on craigslist, in the "farm and Garden" section, for $20-25. Just be careful they didn't previously contain anything harmful.

Morning all. LOOOONG work night. The hail missed us by 8 miles, but I have some grand photos and video of the storms rolling in and through us. We went a lovely shade of lime green and everything. The village was hit by 1.75 and 2 inch hail. It missed us this time around.
Day off today, so town for routine car work and back again.
Competition went well, but thumb is paying me back for it today. That's fine. Doc sees it tomorrow and I want him to see it UGLY.

Onions are finally waking up with the extra feedings.
Tomatoes in the hoop all needed staked and tied.
Potato plants in the hoop are almost 3 feet tall. They are HAPPY in there.
Rest of the garden is toodling along.
New rasping hoe is making weeding so much faster.

Have a great day all.
Hugs to @Sueby

Tomatoes are still not looking great - only a few look healthy, most still look wilty like they may or may not survive, a few look like goners - very disappointing, after how nice they all were looking in their seedling pots. I'll definitely have to buy some starts this weekend because it's too late to start more from seed. Who knows what varieties they will have though.
Potatoes are doing great. I have them in one raised bed, plus some more in six grow boxes that I planted two weeks later, that are doing well, too. My FIL was all, "you're doing it wrong!" when I mentioned the raised bed (even though I've successfully grown them that way before) so I thought I'd try them two ways and see which way turns out best. Been harvesting lots of lettuce and spinach, I'll probably pull up what's there and replant another round.
Cabbages and leeks are ready to plant out, and I'll direct-seed butternuts, cukes and basil this weekend.
That will be it for planting, then in two weeks I'll travel to see my Mom, and by the time I get back, hopefully I'll have a bunch of new plants starting!

I LOVE Gardening with Leon! I've watched him for about 2 years now. I made my first self watering containers using milk jugs from watching his videos....

Good morning gardeners. Showery day today. I'll try to get some flowers planted between showers. I am also hoping to get the wood cut for my garden hod. I made one for my daughter as a Christmas present and she loves it. I know I really need one because in the past I have had to make several trips to bring in the produce. Not much else going on today. The peaches are developing nicely so far. I'm hoping that continues. Next Spring when I trim the tree I will be removing some of the tallest branches. This is a semi dwarf tree and it's still too tall for me to spray the top branches. Have a great day all.
