What did you do in the garden today?

Wow! I love it! I will definitely do that ❤️😃
I have three varieties that are supposed to go well together for bloom time. I remember ones Misty but forget the name of the other two. My plants are rarely flowering at all though.

@igorsMistress I like the idea of mulching the pot...that just might do it if heats the problem.
I’ve done that here and it seemed to help. If you’re using terra cotta it can also help keep in moisture.

It’s a stormy afternoon and evening. Showers pop up and need to keep checking the radar.

Finally weeded the asparagus bed (1st year for them) and exposed the evil bind weed coming up. We have sprayed herbicide 2x on very still mornings with cardboard shields to prevent overspray. So far the asparagus has tolerated the little bit we have sprayed. Need to spray this current stuff, but will wait for a still air opportunity. For new garden thread readers, we’ve been battling this bind weed for a few years. We’ve made progress, but herbicide is helpful. I’ve dug pounds of bindweed roots out of 3 of my raised beds and to not want it spreading further if I can help it.

Bathroom renovation (gut to studs, remove subfloor, remove ceiling…all new everything including an additional new half bath) : started last Nov, spouse broke leg in February just when major items nearly done, and now inspector should be here on Friday to do the final inspection!! Both bathrooms still need trim, but apparently that’s ok to be missing for the inspection.

Waiting for sweet potato starts to arrive. Hoping it is this week!

Now we are getting some rain. I was afraid it had wandered off somewhere else. Should pitter patter along for another 2-3 hours.

Since onions don't cast much shade, I planted them on the south side of a couple raised beds. I planted broccoli, broccolini, and beets that never came up. (I suspect a vole went down the line and ate the seeds.) I'm trying again with other brassicas, and they are coming up! Yay! Only I don't recall what I planted! Boo! :gig They all look alike at that stage. I just know that they aren't kale, because I had to buy some kale seed to plant by the beans.

I do know that one area has purple carrot planted, and I think I might see a couple sprouts coming up. Carrots are really iffy for me. This time, I'm being diligent about watering them every. single. day.

One bunny in, HopTart is fairly easy to catch. Kevin, on the other hand, is a butthead and keeps hopping just out of reach. I swear he’s laughing at us! I found the pigeon I couldn’t catch, the chickens were up in arms about and kept getting in the way, will toss that in the garbage. There are a bunch of holes that need filling and that yard is a disaster.

Has anyone seen @karenerwin lately?

I have port feeders here & the squirrels don't touch them. I bet you'll be happy with them. I only bring them in in heavy snow or monsoon rains.

I hope you get some relief. I think I said it before, I did shots for years & finally gave up because I kept having severe reactions to the shots & got sick of taking Prednisone all the time from them. Good luck.

My Dad had a massive heart attack last night, he's hanging on by a thread. So I'm at the hospital & they only let 1 family member in a day for 2 hrs. But they let my sister go with Mom since she is deaf. I'll get to go in tomorrow. I'm sitting here catching up.
I’m sorry to hear about your dad :hugs Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers:hugs

DH came back from the village barber and she lost her WHOLE garden and their soy and corn crops are demolished.
I took her all the tomato plants I had sitting on the top of the compost pile. They were crooked from having been laying down, but still strong and perky.
She was in tears from the gift.
I told her the varieties were unknown, but she didn't care.
We need to start a facebook page out here for extra plants and those that lost everything. Too late to start from seed and the stuff at big box looks horrible and is $$$$$$.

Spent the afternoon working on the pallet fence with the husband. We just need a few more to reach the brooder and then a few more to make a run.

We attached the wire fencing to the inside with 3/4inch poultry netting staples. Put U posts every 2 pallets. Will paint it eventually.

Found these on Craigslist. This town is an hour away from me... I like the 55 gallon barrel better but would need to cut the top off to access the interior. Or I could go smaller, pay more, and not have the headache of cutting off the top. It's also resealable.

Not sure if everyone knows this. But all these food grade barrels, totes and drums are available because even if a liner is used there is a law on the books in the US that they can only be used ONCE! And, AND they must be made with 100% new material. So all those ingredients, from everywhere, in Everything, causes soo much waste its not even funny. And the people who sell them? They have a contract with factories to buy the empties for a set price. They must take All of them at ome time and pay the same price for 10 or a 100.

I do know😃. Are fruiting problems in blueberries usually about acidity? The soil here is alkaline and the water is too so I grow them in acidic planters and amend through out the year. I think my biggest problem is the heat....but not sure. My understanding is that they like a cool root zone and I think that's where I'm failing. I keep trying to figure out how to cool the roots naturally and think I'm not succeeding well enough. Clay pots with a water reservoir keeps them alive but not thriving. I have a type recommended for hot areas but I've forgotten the name...it's a southern highbush variety though. It might be that the alkaline water is the problem?
I've never tried growing cultivated blueberries. But I can tell you the wild ones would grow in 1-2" of pine duff directly on granite bedrock, in the shade. Used to be the BEST blueberries.
