What did you do in the garden today?

I just ate a radish I had that was grown from seed- let's just say my tongue didn't approve of the taste.

I also acclimated my seedlings again, for about five hours. Maybe I'll plant them out on Friday. And of course, more watering. I also recently picked a tasty strawberry! I think my cayenne pepper spray is working! :ya

Radish is a acquired taste. Im more of a beet lover, but I’ve grown to like radishes more.
For some reason the smell and taste of radish when you first bite into it reminds me of broccoli, but then the bitterness comes in... I usually don't mind it too much, though. To be honest, I forgot how beets tasted. Maybe I'll have to grow those next year.

Can't really tell from the picture how big it is.... But it looks like a little brown snake.. If it is, they don't get very big and feed on worms, snails, and slugs. Not a threat to chickens at all....

Rat snakes, racers, and black snakes, however, will eat baby chicks in a heartbeat.
I have plenty of snails & slugs for them. That’s probably why they like my garden so much!
Your located in NY? Assuming thats where your seeing these little critters.

It looks like a gartner, possibly whipsnake? Are they fast?

Im not really thinking a whipsnake though because its rather thick.

How long?

Some different picture angles could help aswell.
It’s semi-fast, but tiny. I’ll have to get a new pic when I see it out sunning on the brick again. There’s a bunch of them, I don’t think they are poisonous as my dog caught one a few years ago and nothing happened to him. I like snakes, frogs, toads, lizards (not that we have any lizards here).

Gartners range usually from 18-30 inches in length. (For adults) some subspecies are considered venomous, however not enough venom to effect humans. Some individuals are considered poisonous and could be capable of causing anaphylaxis to some individuals.

It could be a juvenile. I would more accurately be able to tell you what snake it is with some more pictures and length.

The rat, racer & black snakes also like eggs. If they find a way in, they'll eat eggs, chicks & will even attempt to eat an adult bird. At night when the birds are roosted, the snake will slither towards a sleeping bird, they lunge for the head & try to swallow. They only get as far as the neck before they realize the bird is too big, but by then the bird has suffocated. When you find a perfectly healthy pigeon or chicken, dead the next morning, with what appears to be a "slimed" head & neck, that is the work of a snake that bit off more that it could chew. At night, closing chicken doors & having screens in windows can help keep snakes away.

(I'm hatching out some pigeons & this stinker keeps trying to find a way into the loft. I tried to chase him off...in the other direction. That little shit! 20220609_153500.jpg He just quickly went around me. He knew he wanted to get over to that building with the smell of eggs & hatchlings.) Dude, it's OK to do rodent patrol, but my birds are off limits...I'm watching 👀 you!!!

And if anyone is curious, (This is pretty basic and anyone who knows snakes should know.) but some people might not, and it can be a little confusing.

Poisonous means if you bite it.

Venomous means if it bites you.

I would just love to go on about hognose snakes, so if anyone wants to know about them, please ask. Would be happy to share details of hognose or any snakes, and morphs.

Yes, I know they eat eggs.... That's actually what this one was attempting to do when I intervened... I'm also pretty sure this is the same snake I've already had TWO run-ins with prior to today. The first time I saw it in the barn eating chicken eggs. The 2nd time I came across it when I was on the 4-wheeler. Tried to run it over. Missed it. It tried to go up a giant gum tree and I knocked it down. It disappeared after that.... Both of those encounters were within the past 30 days. I knew it was a matter of time before it ended up in one of the coops. I'm just glad I was outside when it did....

I love radishes. But if they aren't grown right they can be bitter.
