What did you do in the garden today?

I just did the math and my potatoes are at 90 days. They're Yukon golds, so everything I'm seeing says after 100 days. Sounds like I need to get the next round in the ground pretty much now (within a week at most) to get a second harvest at full size before first frost.

But! My plants only have a tiny bit of dieback happening and I'm used to seeing fully yellow potato plants before digging them. Hmm. Admittedly my Papa never grew Yukon golds, so I'm used to digging Russets. Will the Yukon yellow up before they need digging as well?

Mint is looking a bit bedraggled. It was almost totally wilted last night but bounced back a bit overnight. I'll try to feed the garden early tomorrow. With a little luck I'll be able to get some weeding done tonight or tomorrow.

Yesterday DH and I got a bunch of 2 inch plant pots seeded. Some okra, some cucumber, some corn, lettuce, mizuna, bee balm, yarrow. We've still got a good chunk of the season left so we'll see what happens. Giant experiment, lol. Oh, seeded pumpkins too. Sweet pie pumpkins!

Speaking of tomatoes, I've got a head scratcher....

Two years ago I bought one of these Better Boy patio containers. Last year I reused the container for some cherry tomatoes. They kind of took over and there were tons of tomatoes I never collected.

Fast forward to this year... I decided not to grow tomatoes in the patio container because I never switched out the soil. I figured it would be nutrient depleted so instead I threw some flower seeds in it and moved the container down by my blackberries at the end of the row.

Well I noticed some foliage growing a few weeks ago and thought it looked like tomato foliage... But I knew I hadn't planted any in that pot so I thought maybe I was wrong... Nope, it's now producing flowers. There's probably 6 or 7 very pathetic looking tomato vines growing in that pot which isn't very big... Maybe a 9 - 12 inch pot?

I'm guessing some of the cherry tomatoes seeded themselves in the pot but it's just a guess. I have no idea what is going on come out.... It's a mystery! I do need to probably remove all but the strongest and feed the poor thing. It does look rather pitiful....

I found a volunteer tomato as well. no idea how it ended up there.

With all of the apples falling WAY before they're ripe, I've been picking up as many as I can to prevent the pup from eating too many. Is there anything I can do with them? I hate for them to go to waste. Most/All have bug damage.

That's too bad. We paid a little more than $200 for 5 of them when we bought ours...but that was over ten years ago. I haven't priced rain harvesting tanks in long time, but I'm betting even at a hundred their still a good deal if you're trying to set up a rain harvesting system.
probably much higher now. I'm not even interested in the container, just the cage. People use them as firewood drying/storage racks. I made some out of old 2x4s and 3/4" flooring. I carry them to the porch landing (there are 2 doors to the enclosed porch) and get firewood daily without having to go outside in foul weather.

I still got more than half to go..............I thinking about pouring pine sol or Clorox in the polluted water.............................I'll try Clorox tomorrow.
Are you sure you want to be dumping that stuff into the ground? Just let nature do its thing without the chemicals.

Those little stinkers! I'm setting my trap today, they can't resist cantaloupe.
I hope so! I put some cantaloupe rinds in the trap today, the chuck hasn't shown interest in sweet feed.

Does anyone not pinch or prune tomatoes?
I do otherwise the bushes get way to "full"

Morning. Got a half inch of rain overnight. :yesss:

Not much new in the garden. My experiment with hand pollinating squash the day after the flower bloomed was a fail. Seems female squash are only viable the day they are open, which I kind of figured. Only male flowers on the cucumbers so far.

I'm so bad at pinching suckers on my brandywine tomatoes. Some how I look every day, but I always miss & end up with 2 tops. 🙄 Really doesn't seem that hard yet I fail! LOL Last year I didn't prune or stake a sungold at all & that thing produced more than any plant I've ever grown. Its offspring are popping up all in the garden paths & I'm letting them grow. Going to leave them to do their thing, no pruning until I can't get around them.

I'm trying to stay on top of pruning tomato suckers - I'm already behind. I took some off Snow White's and Sungolds yesterday to try to root in water - just experimenting. Last year I let everything sprawl and it became a jungle so really trying to keep the jungle to a minimum considering I have way too many of everything planted with more in the wings.
