What did you do in the garden today?

YES! The yellow bowls of soapy water have caught/killed a SVB!! Likely coming over from neighbor-he just let’s pumpkins rot at corner of his garden, so he gets a huge number of pumpkin plants. Squash bug and SVB heaven!

I’ve got these yellow bowls around much of my garden. I’ll have to refresh and replace today.
Does that make the squash bugs go to him rather than eat yours?! Or just make more bugs for both of you!?

Good morning all. It’s already warm outside. We took the pups to the park first thing and hubs has to go to work now. I’m sweaty, it was super muggy at the park. They also put down manure and it was stinky. I’ve got the ring soaker going on one of the lilacs to give it a try. I like it, super simple.

Not much happening in the garden today, just growing & eating. :gig

Got the pellet stove in today & heading out to get some poison for the dang chippies. I give. We have one that knows how to snap all the traps & then eat the peanut butter. We have tried rat snap traps, have a heart traps, bucket traps - he figures them all out. He's living under the siding on the house so he has to go. Poison it is.

Oh, it just creates more bugs that come to me. Two old guys that garden to my immediate north -two neighbors that live next to each other. While they might sprinkle Sevin occasionally, they don’t do much else. One just shakes off the Colorado Potato Beetle and shrugs. The other just marvels at the hundreds of pumpkin flowers. Yesterday, he realized a fruit tree was infested with JB. Yes, out came the hose and he was spraying them off. I did tell him that he could treat his lawn to kill the grubs, and knock lower hanging JB into soapy water. Hopefully they treat their lawn. No chance they will manage any garden pest beyond a sprinkle of Sevin.

Welp, the potatoes were a bust. They grew, put on flowers, flowers fell off, couple of weeks later they started turning yellow and dying back. They've been a few days without water so I went to dig them since they were starting to get crispy and got nothing. No tubers, nothing that looked like tubers starting to grow, nada. Bummer. My garden is not doing good this year. Still more than I've ever grown! My biggest garden yet. But just not producing a lot.

Time to yank the mustard and the kale. They're done with the heat the bugs.

Thanks! Spouse made them in 2020. I asked for bean towers they were between 8-10’ tall. This is what he came up with. I can climb up on the exposed sides.

Most of my pole beans are for drying. So, they get used in soup. There is a satisfaction in growing something that has low failure and needs little to no attention, and can simply dry on the vine. When picked, we shell them into a wire colander so they completely/fully are dried out before storing. Also, I grow some bush varieties for drying. This year the bush type are between the two towers.

This year, the farthest to the right (easiest to access) are green bean for fresh eating. First time growing the pole version. Usually, my green beans are the bush type. So, this year I’ll have both bush and pole green beans.
Acre for me, thanks for sharing! This is my first year and i would love love to grow fresh green beans! Zone 6a i got about 5 cucks and hubby just got done putting them in ball jars with all sorts of things. How exciting! I love growing peppermint, because it always takes and with a big area, i think it is wonderful. Learning as i go. Thank you!
