What did you do in the garden today?

Good morning gardeners. I was up at 0230 and there were just a few high clouds. We ran an errand after the dogs played at the park and could literally see the downpour headed for our house as we drove away. It didn’t last long but it rained, in my yard! I have decided that since the heat has been so unbearable and I haven’t been able to accomplish a lot that I’m pretty much done this year. Between now and next Spring I’m going to clean out beds, have the soil tested, and amend the shade garden. I do have a spot I’m prepping for garlic this fall, but other than that I’m just going to maintain and prep better for next year. That includes setting up sunken beds with shade in the veg garden. I’m also going to try growing some ginger indoors also. My house smells amazing right now, I’m roasting ginger, garlic and shallots to make curry paste.

recipe please for curry paste.

So just realized the tomato seeds I sowed the other day prob won't ever be able to do anything this year...prob bout 5 weeks too late! But they are in ground nonetheless.
I must have more big maters!!! I hate I scared myself off planting more beefsteak after my jungle experience last year. But hey I know what I want next year right!?
I do have 3 good sized suckers in water but idk if they will ever root cuz the sun keeps getting on em. I'll give em few more days in hopes they do though!
Are any of yall planting anything in the next few days for a fall harvest?
If so what?
And are you starting seeds indoors then hardening off and transplanting later?
I have tomatoes and peppers growing inside to go out soon. I'll be planting cucumbers, squash, red amaranth, radishes and some sunflowers this coming week. It's finally time to plant here❤️
So all is done on the cat tree..View attachment 3198516
Bet your kitties will love it!

recipe please for curry paste.
Here you go. This recipe makes about 1 1/3 cups which is enough for four meals.

** 5 to 20 dried Thai chilis, soak in hot water
1 1/2 Tablespoons salt
2 to 3 Tablespoons curry powder
2 to 3 Tablespoons Turmeric
2 teaspoons ground coriander
3 Tablespoons lemongrass paste
1/4 c fresh cilantro

6” piece of ginger, peeled and sliced
4 large heads of garlic, remove papery parts and cut off the tops
4 large shallots, remove skins and stem ends

Drizzle ginger, shallots and garlic with oil, wrap in foil and roast at 350 for 15 mins, remove ginger and increase temp to 400, roast shallots and garlic 30 mins more. Let cool so you can handle, then squeeze garlic from the heads into food processor; add remaining ingredients and process until smooth. Divide into 1/3 cup portions and freeze until ready to use. I don’t add the salt as I prefer to adjust it while cooking the curry.

** The number of chili’s you use depends on how much heat you like. I usually use 3 to 5 because hubs doesn’t like it too spicy.

This is my curry powder recipe. I use all of it in the paste and omit the extra turmeric and coriander

2 Tablespoons each ground cumin, ground coriander and ground turmeric
1/2 teaspoon each red chili flakes, ground yellow mustard and ground ginger, plus 1 teaspoon salt.

I need to do some fall planting soon, I just don't know what. I am not a super fan of beets and such but I feel like with the projected "what is coming" I need some extra just in case.
What’s the projected what is coming? Food shortages and such? Scary ain’t it?

I've been wondering if it's too late to plant some rutabaga in my onion beds. :idunno

There was a bunch of nymphs on the cucumber I picked today - from the uncovered vines. I'd been impressed not to see a whole lot of bugs...till now. The plants look great though. For now.

Does anyone take a planned year off from gardening? My neighbors used to take every 7 years off for 'the sabbath' they called it, the let the garden rest for a year. I've been thinking about not doing it next year. I want to do some extended traveling & the garden would make that hard. I suppose it will depend on the economy & the access to food supplies too. Just a thought & was wondering if anyone does it.

I have not ever done it, but it makes sense to let the garden rest. I am not sure I can 'afford' it within the next year or two but definitely will consider it I think. I would LOVE to travel but the chickens would need someone to watch them even if I didn't have a garden.

Good morning gardeners. It is only 81F here but super muggy. My garden is looking ok. Hoping to be done with this hot spell soon. Mid 80’s today and tomorrow so I’ll be making bread tomorrow. I have brownies in the oven now. I got an early start on laundry so the last load is in the dryer. So far the only rain has been a few spits here and there. Although I can hear a few rumbles of thunder. If we don’t get a decent rain I’ll be watering again tomorrow. As far as letting all your “fields” take a year off you could let one section lay fallow one season and work that into your regular crop rotation. Just a thought. It’s a little too late to plant rutabagas now @Sueby, but you could go with turnips. They don’t take as long as rutabagas but are similar. Although rutabagas are related to cabbage, hence the aroma when cooking. Also, turnip greens are quite tasty. I cleaned up my onion bed this morning to get it ready to plant my turnips. They are a low carb alternative to potatoes. I plan on pulling an 8 foot section of the potatoes later this week or early next week to make way for a small planting of peas. I’m waiting until the second week in August to plant more lettuce. The weather is usually cooling down around then. Hope that works.

Look what's ripe already!!

Also, could someone tell me what kind of guards, squash, or zucchini these ones are??? The pumpkins and these things all started growing wild in our yard.
