What did you do in the garden today?

Welcome back @BReeder! Good afternoon gardeners. I believe I determined why my hydrangea hasn’t been blooming. Apparently it needs more water than it was getting. I did actually water it a couple of times in the Spring so I need to give it some more attention. I got the weed whacking finished in the backyard, big garden walkways and behind the big garden. I plan on watering it after I finish with the chickens and feeding my little dog. I counted 7 eggplants developing and really happy to see some green beans nearly ready to pick. I’ll leave them for the morning. I may pick some more chard and kale tomorrow if they look perky enough. All of the second plantings of summer squash and cucumbers are developing their secondary leaves already. We’re supposed to get some showers tomorrow but not enough rain to give the garden a good drink. At least the grass isn’t as crunchy. The temperatures are a bit more seasonally normal. Warm, but not in the 90’s for now. I’m hoping the garden will pick up production with the less severe temperatures.

Last week a family of groundhogs deimated my corn so today i tried to stabilize the stalks because the beans are starting to come on strong. Going to cut some Bamboo poles to strengthen them before the beans get out of control. Picked a peck of maters and several pounds of taters. Built fences around containers of sweet potatoes cuz whistle pigs ate every single leaf off. Live trapped two groundhogs, because wife will freak if i shoot them. Found out it is illegal to relocate them so :shhhhh: i shot the third.
Made arrangements for a neighbor to haul the other two to the backside of his property and: shhhhhh; shoot them.

There are parsnips growing on the one end, and they will stay until after a hard freeze.
I planted parsnips for the first time this year. DW wants me to use them in soup. Are they better if left until a hard frost?

I can't fit the dang suyo long cukes in the bathroom sink to wash them. :gig I need my sink back!
I love Suyo Longs! Just wash them in the bathroom sink, first one end, then the other :D

Excellent plan. One would need to have a thousand acres, maybe more, to move them far enough they won't come back.

@BReeder! Great to see you!

I’m hoping the long range forecast changes because we’re heading into another stretch of 90+ temperatures at the beginning of next week.
Sounds like here. Dreading the 90s next week. I think the heat is keeping my butternut squash plants from having female flowers. I was hoping that a cool(ish) week would convince them it was safe.
Yes! This accurately describes my bush beans too... Long, tall and floppy.
Mine too! I loop mine through and around the tomato cages I use as supports. Calling them "bushes" is not accurate. They are a long stem, that's all.

I pulled lots of weeds today. I have a never ending battle with crab grass and other grasses.

Yesterday, I dug some potatoes. A few plants looked very nearly dead before we left for vacation, and they were toast when we got back. I've learned that happens pretty fast, so I mark plants with a stick when they start turning yellow.

The potatoes went into the air fryer and man, they were good! It was also our first taste of purple potatoes, and I'll definitely be growing them again. This variety was Purple Majesty, and only 4 of 8 ever grew. I planted another variety, Magic Molly, as well. 18 of 18 of those came up, and I really hope they taste as good. I haven't dug any of them yet. Interestingly, the Magic Molly plants have made quite a few seed balls. Not sure if I want to try saving any of those seeds. Maybe.

Anyone in zone 5 grow grapes? I tried many years ago, and they didn't do well at all. I blame myself, as I didn't read up on where/how to plant them, and put them "where I thought they'd look nice."

I want them for fresh eating and juice/jam/jelly, not for making wine. Any favorite varieties?

I’ve read they get a little better after frost. But, it’s my first year growing them.

Oh crud... I forgot all about the 3 beds of potatoes I still have to dig up. It's supposed to rain (God willing) for the next 4 days. I should have pulled them out by today....

Crap.
