What did you do in the garden today?

Rain is by and large missing us today. It's splitting up just to the west of us and going north and south. I don't think we'll even get a tenth of an inch today... I'm probably just being greedy now 😂 but I really wanted decent rain today. The ground has literally soaked up every single drop. I can't remember any time in the 2.5 yrs we've lived here that it's ever rained even half this much and we didn't have a river through the garden from the storm drain culvert runoff. Not this time... We've had 5 inches of rain and nothing is coming from the storm drain culvert because the ground is literally soaking it all up like a sponge.

Right now they are predicting more rain next weekend. I really REALLY hope they are right... 🙏🤞
We had flooding on the street that feeds ours, but our ground has done the same thing. The place where I have my fruit trees will sometimes flood a bit and there was a little bit of surface water, but it all soaked in pretty quick. I’ll keep my fingers crossed you get some more!

Ugh, we need rain so bad. The black eyed susans are dying. Those are like weeds & you can't kill them even if you try!

I pulled 3 just turning brandywines, that critter isn't eating any more tomatoes! & I will have a BLT this week.:tongue

I got 8 quarts of beef broth done, all sealed. 5 pints in the canner now. It's not all that tasty though. But it could be because I've had a glass of wine & it doesn't compare, lol. :idunno

The kitchen is done, all the cabinets are in, trim & fillers all done, everything is painted. Only thing left is tile backsplash but I haven't made up my mind yet. Oh & the window needs a sill. I'm so happy with my new kitchen, I absolutely love it & it functions sooo much better.

eta: I got 12 large cupcake silicon thingies full of onions & they're freezing. That's 1lb per muffin cup. So very much not worth the effort. They taste like vinegar for some reason & I didn't put any in. & they never really got dark enough for me, I just couldn't waste any more than the like 15 hours I had in. LOL

My squash plants are making freak squashes!

These tomatoes taste better than the first one I got from these plants:

These might be terrible pictures, but these are on my potato plants (defense is just like JB, falling when startled or jostled).

I spent about 4 hours on my hands and knees weeding the asparagus patch. Mostly crabgrass, but some other stuff too. I think my hands and wrists will ache tomorrow, but it was worth it! Next is to haul my big pile of compost over and spread it around the asparagus plants. The weeds I pulled are the start of the next compost pile. :)

We finally had enough of a break in the either-stormy-or-blistering-hot summer weather today that I was able to mow my front lawn, including around my pumpkins and squash that I threw in the ground along the side of my house. I'm so pleased with how well they're growing despite (because of?) my semi-neglect of them! Such beautiful flowers. And today I found a baby butternut squash! A little over two inches long. I'm pretty psyched, I've had such bad luck with gourds in the past.

And I can't remember if I mentioned last time that my orange guzmania has two pups, but they're growing right along too!

Ever go into your garden area expecting to stay a few minutes and an hour and a half later you're still there?

Yep, that was me this evening. Ended up going crazy with the lopers and tearing out a bunch of small trees that were taking over a corner of the garden area. Created a brush pile that's at least 6-8 ft in diameter and easily 4 ft tall.

Then I decided to pull out all the cukes. They were pretty much kaput anyway. Debated on pulling the trap tomato next to them but ended up leaving it for now.

Then I went into the hoop house and pruned my Romas down to a skeleton. They were pretty much done anyway and about 90% dead due to disease. The only thing left on them now are a few green leaves at the tips of each vine.

Need to do the same with the other tomatoes but it was getting dark. Will need to drive the truck down there to put the brush in the back. There's way too much for the gorilla cart.

The grass is starting to come back to life from the rain but all my anxiety is focused on the young trees I'd planted. I had a Weeping Willow and at least 1 Pecan that lost all their leaves. I'm praying 🙏 they come back. My peach trees also started turning yellow and falling off... Not in mass, but enough that I'm anxiously concerned about it.

I planted parsnips for the first time this year. DW wants me to use them in soup. Are they better if left until a hard frost?

I love Suyo Longs! Just wash them in the bathroom sink, first one end, then the other :D

Excellent plan. One would need to have a thousand acres, maybe more, to move them far enough they won't come back.
Yeah, as much as i hated to do it, cannot just give my problems to someone else.
