What did you do in the garden today?

I pick up bagged leaves in the fall and again in the spring when the Live Oaks lose theirs. Then there's the tree guy who brings me a couple truck loads of chipped wood per year.
Edit: I have used this for many years. I used to use LOTS of mulch and after a while I never had to till and always had a great garden. One year I was not so dilligent in the garden and the blaket got really low. Low enough that the nut grass that had been spreading for yeare,unbeknownst to me, Broke through the thin blanket like a lawn, After getting the nut garss under control I now just use enough th keep the weeds down. I still have to pull a few weeds but not many.

I wish we had leaves here! The trees in our yard are mesquite and willow acacia. Not much leaf litter.

Very hot here again today, so I didn’t do much outdoors. DH bought me a new wheelbarrow! So I finally got a bunch of debris moved to the compost pile. I planted in all the empty spaces in the garden: kale, arugula, lettuce, spinach, collards, endive, and beets. Endive is a new crop for me…im hoping we like it! Will have to water in the morning to make sure they get some water, but just checked the weather and a 50% of showers from 7-12 in the morning, fingers crossed I can keep the hose off!

Also picked up some extra herbs from my aunt to plant, we are going through Basil faster than it is growing, so that was awesome, and I’ll keep one Basil in a pot for the house, hopefully I can keep it alive through part of winter. Let the chicks try the spent cilantro (they loved it), and some older browning Basil (they hated it). Lol

Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler so I may try to weed. I keep waiting for the pole beans to explode, I am getting about half a bowl a day off of 5 tepees…seems slower than normal. Glad I planted some bush beans also. 4 zucchini/squash look pollinated & growing. The one butternut squash plant I put in has FOUR squash growing, all just started in the past few days! Picked the first ripened pepper I’ve ever grown today! Usually they stay green. These were called Healthy Peppers and they grew prolific and quick here in upstate!

I hope all of you are doing well. The tomato hornworm pics give me the heeby jeebies!

I picked out some seeds to plant tomorrow morning for fall veggies -

2 types of carrots
2 types of bush beans

And for the heck of it...

Spaghetti squash
Desert King Watermelon
Pumpkin

It shouldn't get below 50 degrees here until after November 1st... Maybe later. So why not try and see how far I can get?

Welp notin in garden today except getting my boy outta it! He's moved to a bachelor pad now so I'm trying to let him have free time when I can keep an eye out and I look out the window and he's just standing in the garden crowing!
I hollered and he starts strutting down the entire garden, gets to the end and grabs a cherry tomato. He stepped on my transplanted beefsteak suckers I'd been rooting...broke off several limbs so idk if they'll take or not.
Lil turd didn't even finish his tomato!

My garden is being overrun by grasshoppers! Too bad it's too far away (on purpose) from the coop. If it wasn't right next to the road, I'd take a few girls up there... Too risky though

Hum...yeah I got squash bugs big as old grasshoppers!!! Luckily they are in the compost pile with the freebie cantaloupe but they are also eating my sunflowers!!!
I didn't have a glove nearby and tried to get Joey to come get it...hes got so many feathers on his crest he can't see squat (hence stepping on my transplanted tomatoe suckers!) So I tried to grab it by the antler thingees...and that nasty thing cocked it's head and looked at me then took off. Goober

The squirrels chewed off every sunflower head that I didn't harvest, carried them on top of the hoop house, and left a righteous mess up there...

Tonight I also caught around a giant squash bug party going down on the hoop house netting right next to the sunflowers. I sprayed them all with Sevin

I haven’t tried from seed, only with starts. Home Depot and Lowes carry them in Spring, the earlier you start the better. Feed them every two weeks during the growing season, they like nitrogen! Bunny poop has been the best for me.

The one in my picture is one I started from seed! I started with 5 or 6 of them. 2 of them made it to planting. I planted 1 in the raised bed and 1 in the “in ground” garden. The one in the picture is the one in the raised bed. The other one never did much and finally gave up the ghost so to speak.

We get lots of pod litter! Have you found any good use for those besides compost? I keep trying to find something useful to do with all of them.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could take Joey on a tour of your freezer and he'd understand and become just the best behaved roo around?

@pennyJo1960 my Roma tomatoes have been my best crop so far this year. I pick 6-8 every day sometimes more. I’m currently working on trying a new to me recipe for “mild salsa”. It calls for 9 cups of peeled & diced tomatoes. So I spent an hour this morning before wore peeling ( hot water method ) & dicing. Now I’m working on the 2nd half.
My cucumbers are doing really well too. This year I am picking them at the 6 to 8” stage instead of letting them get bigger like I usually do.
After I watered this morning I sprinkled Sevin dust to help combat the ants. I tried to avoid getting any on the flowers (I’m hoping to avoid harming any honey bees).
Forgot to add that it was 91 out today but the heat index made it feel like 110.
