What did you do in the garden today?

dumbest chicken ever
Nah, Daisy is the dumbest chicken ever, 3 year old White Rock. She started eating eggs this year, never did that before. Sure she doesn't have to vie for roost space but she never gets out of her coop in the barn. All the other girls go out every day and do whatever they want until it gets dark.

I did this in the garden today!
Odd that you are getting tomatoes and asparagus at the same time!

But did still have a little green on the other side...will it ripen anymore? Or is there anything I can do to ripen it further?
I think if it fell off when you tried to turn it over it is as ripe as you want it to be!

put her in the house overnight by the next morning she might give up brooding. I did it once and it worked.
Ain't no broody (or other non day old) chicken coming in my house. They live in the buster (18"x18"x3' 1/2" welded wire) cage until they talk nice and don't head back to the nest.

I've been trying to sow purslane all summer and the dang rabbits keep eating it all before it can get established! 🤬
Hmmm, we have plenty of rabbits and plenty of purslane. Maybe our wild rabbits don't like it?

No kidding! I thought the asparagus would have been done WEEKS ago. But the patch is now in its 3rd year (finally!!!), the ferns are HUGE, and every crown I planted now has a dozen ferns. I'm still getting finger-sized or bigger stalks to harvest, even in August. I'm thrilled!!!

We call them exhibition crates welded wire is the broody buster have 3 of them let the air under their butts.
bunny wire cages with no bedding in it. YEP. Air those butts out!
Same heat and humidity here. The shade cloths are helping with a lot of the heat scald (we have no trees). The first set of tomatoes were hail bruised 3 times, but now they look good.
There is a LOT of soil moisture testing going on.

We're dealing with the same heat here. It's stifling. I really need to get something else planted because much of my garden is fizzling out but it's so hot that I don't want to go out there, lol.
We've had an abundance of watermelon this year though! We have been harvesting all season, 1 or 2 here and there but last week we harvested 12 melons all at once! I've been trying unusual watermelon recipes all week to try to use some of them up.

It's weird, I know, but hear me out, this was pretty good! Lol!

I didn't plant any watermelon this spring and now I regret it :hit

Too bad you aren't closer. I've had the biggest harvest of watermelons to date! More than enough to share. It was my first year growing Black Diamond watermelon and Congo watermelon and they were both very productive, especially the black diamond though. We also made watermelon jelly and it's really good! So far it's my favorite way to preserve watermelon. I think I'll try making some watermelon fruit roll up as well but I don't think that will last quite as long as far as shelf stability.

So, confession. I've done very minimal fall gardening here in southeast Georgia. Mostly because I'm exhausted after tending the garden through our summer heat. Everyone around here swears it's way easier and more fun to garden in the fall because there are less pests but I swear I had the exact opposite experience when I tried it...mind you I haven't tried for YEARS.
Is anyone else in zone 8b ish? What do you grow? When do you grow it?

Lol, I'm going to try to put together an organized plan and actually stick to it since the grocery bills are just getting out of hand and a fall garden feels necessary this year.
