What did you do in the garden today?

I have 3 freezers full of food, a huge pantry stocked, 5 or 6 5-gallon buckets, and at least 4-5 boxes full of canned, bottled, and packaged food. That's not including things I personally can or waterglassed eggs.

Then today something dawned on me..... If my house was bombed, my entire food supply would be gone. I have everything stored here at my house. I really need to diversify. I wonder if my mom would let me put stuff in her spare bedroom closet....

You sound like me wondering if my dad would let me stash stuff in his spare bedroom closet... Probably not, unless it was food he wanted to eat.

Nothing much going on today. Dad said he saw a skunk go under my car last night, but when DH went "looking" he couldn't find it. I did smell it on my car today when I cranked it up, which was odd I thought. We'll be watching around dusk for a while now. Can't have the filthy things hanging around here. They are absolutely disgusting with the number of parasites and diseases they carry.

Once my daughter and the kids move out we’ll have much more storage space. I need more for water in particular. It’s the same for us though, everything is here. But if I can’t defend my home from wandering hordes or bombs then I don’t want to be around anyway. I’ll save the last bullet for myself.

Maybe I have a twisted sense of humor, but I think that's hilarious.

My "good" hive swarmed at the beginning of March. I was really not expecting it, and am still quite irked.

That happened to us a couple years back. It was an odd blessing in disguise because two weeks after the swarm one of our traps was packed with a massive hive(it's still oddly huge).

Honestly, I giggled pretty hard at the dude trying to steal our hive...I was upset but the girls took care of him. He tried to press charges but the cops just called us to tell us laughing about it. Nothing came of it.

I've got no idea how he even knew they were back there which is concerning. We have a pretty tall privacy fence at the front of the house. Only thing I can think is he knew someone we knew and they mentioned it in passing

Welp there it is folks. My one tomato success this year defeated by sudden hornworms. Didn't see a single one all year was so happy to not see them. Then day or two or rain...BAM! Biggest hornworms I've ever seen. I've been getting other caterpillars off my tomatoes all year but THW just showed up and laughed

OMG! They have seed collections that include, tropical, container, seaside, cool climate, short season, long season, high altitude, canning, or paste !!!

They have Every. Tomato. Known. In. The. Tomato-verse! I've ordered from them, got my order quickly, prices were very reasonable.

I feel the same, and as well as being more potent, the hardnecks seem to have bigger cloves. I planted too many last year though since they only last so long, I probably lost a good third or more to drying out, turning brown, or sprouting.

My hardneck (Music variety) garlic stores well in my basement. By February/March, it gets a bit shriveled and tries to sprout, but I use it anyway. I use 2-3 cloves when they get that way, to make up for the smaller size.

But if I can’t defend my home from wandering hordes or bombs then I don’t want to be around anyway. I’ll save the last bullet for myself.

I need to dig a bunch of potatoes soon. I have the dead/dried plants marked with stakes. Since I planted them earlier than I ever have, I'll be digging them earlier too. I still have some plants that are green, so I'll leave them go until they die back too.

When all the taters are dug, I'm going to till up that area and maybe plant a winter cover crop. I have some alfalfa seed, so it'll probably be that. I just have to till it under right away in the spring. Then till it again, as once isn't enough to knock it all down.

The only thing garden related that I accomplished today was transplanting the philodendrons. I have a pothos I need to transplant also, and then I’m moving the Christmas cactus to that pot. I read they like to be a little snug and that pot is pretty shallow. The green willow bonsai showed up yesterday, I received three. They’re currently in water until they start roots and shoots. We have a decent chance for a little bit of rain tomorrow night, but I can’t risk that so I’ll be out early to water in the morning. I have to find the teenager and get dinner, have a great night everyone.

THe giant red hornworm is in a Mason jar with grape leaves.
We have named him Clifford. UV light experiment in three hours.

As expected, Clifford goes invisible in the blacklight. Only his white spots glow neon, glowstick, green. Making him super hard to spot when you look too fast, unlike his giant fat neon green glowstick cousins. UGH.

I guess he can live in a jar. He is cool.

Oh a whim i got a fence post digger. This thing is BRUTAL. Taters and all sorts of stuff that needs holes. This august ground got nuffins against me with this post hole demon. Think ill spread some taters out for the sept season, start garlic in OCT this year see if i can get a few more months out of it before it dries out this time.
