Today in the garden I put netting over my raspberries so my crafty chickens can't get any more of them.

Not just if you wear contacts. Also if you have fingers and eyes...or just a face. I still remember the first time I cut up a bunch of my habaneros for salsa and I told myself, "Gloves? I don't need no steenking gloves." Then an hour later I got something in my eye and reflexively sent a finger in there after the offending particle. Lesson learned.
Mulch can help prevent that crust.Today I got a handful of okra from the garden. I won't need to water for a day or two, maybe three even. That storm dropped somewhere between 2 and 3 inches on us I'd say. That's how much water was in every empty bucket, cat food bowl, etc. Yesterday I did get out and pull all the grass out of the front garden. My tiny asparagus has sent up a tiny crown. It's adorable! Lol, at least something is growing well. The watermelon plants, three of them, have set a couple of fruit. They have a ton of flowers on them still so there's room for more, and time too.
Tomorrow I have to find time to get out and fix the planted garden beds. The rain compacted the top layer and they're crusted. I'm worried the seeds won't be able to come up (assuming and hoping they didn't all run away).
Harvest Jerusalem artichokes through the end of September usually Karen. They take roughly 120 days I think. Before frost and snow since you get those things. Nice haul from your garden! How do you know when the Jerusalem Artichokes are ready? Mine are very tall.
I harvested 45 yellow cherry tomatoes from 1 plant today! Picked 3 zucchini, a few green beans, some paste tomatoes and some regular cherry tomatoes. Oh and a very small eggplant.
I made stew when I got home from work. I used onions and potatoes from my garden
Speaking of work, 60% of the employees at the Walmart I work at called off work on Sunday
It sure made it hard for the 40% of us that came in to work. Not sure why so many called off.![]()
I don't wear gloves either. I actually enjoy licking my finger for the following 2 weeks & getting that hot sting! I'm weird.I do that all the time. never learned the lesson, lol. and no way to put gloves for any reason - not sure why but that's me.

My artichokes I just waited until the end of the season and they died offf like my sweet potato's did and kind of dug them both up at the same time. How do you know when the Jerusalem Artichokes are ready? Mine are very tall.
