What did you do in the garden today?

Merry Christmas everyone!

Mrs Lobo had 6 potted plumeria in it and a few other tropicals.

I have tropicals too. Many are in my greenhouse, hopefully not fried. I'm sure many will be toast. I did bring some in the house but some are way too big. Most of my plumeria are inside but they dropped almost all their leaves. Hopefully your wife and I have survivors!

When I received my Mortgage Lifter and Burpee Giant tomato seeds a few days ago, I set them a side some where and now I can't find them.

I've not grown the Burpee Giant but Mortgage Lifter did great for me and produced large and tastie 'maters. Good luck with locating them!

Did you throw those fine ladies some scratch?

I found out how to kill spiders around my aquaponic set up. I am going to try spraying them with apple cider vinegar.

Vinegar will also kill ants.

I still had about 30 nice collard plants, a 20 ft row of mustard, a dozen broccoli making side shoots and 2 cabbage in my garden before all this. I picked what I could and shared with folks and chickens. Also have a variety of greens in the fridge. Still was lots left I could not get. I hate to see it wasted but with the cold air and of course sciatica and arthritis decided to rear it's ugly head. I just physically couldn't get it all. Most years here things do pretty good well into winter. Oh well once in a while we get a crazy year like this. Guess I'll find out just how cold hardy collards are. Maybe something left for the chickens. If any survive to seed in spring, I'll defiantly save seen from those. These are a land race I suppose. They've been passed down through my DH family for a loooong time. His father passed on a couple years ago and we are the "keeper of the seed" now. I do have a large bottle of seed stored in the freezer I keep growing out always saving some back. I'd hate to be the one to loose them.

Hope everyone is keeping warm and having a wonderful holiday!

18 degrees with icy sleet and 25mph winds for the past couple days, so I was worried about my chickens' PVC nipple water freezing. So I filled a 3-gallon container and took out some bowls for the hens, dumped out the ice from the roosters' waterer and refilled it with warmer water... none of them showed any interest! Apparently they're not dehydrated - eating ice or snow? They're even laying a few eggs. so they must not be too uncomfortable.
The garden I expected to be dead, but I discovered one cabbage still surviving, a nice red one! One quart of sauerkraut worth, currently fermenting.
I also forgot I had some leeks growing! Cut them off to 3" above the ground, expect a nice leek harvest in the spring - which seems interminably long in the future, but hey, the days are already starting to get longer now!
Yeah, my employer offers each employee $1500/yr as a perk benefit reimbursement for most anything related to mental & physical wellness or sustainability. You can use it for gardening supplies, buying tickets to a concert or sporting event, getting a massage, buying a gym membership or gym clothes, whatever... It's a nice benefit! In fact, I'm thinking about using some of my benefit next year to buy a new potting station
Wow! I want to work for your company! Mine gives free charging for my electric car, which is pretty awesome and has saved me tons on what I might have spent on gas, but I would love to get employer perks for my chickens and gardening!
