What did you do in the garden today?

Not the best pics because this one is still in the garage and sideways. The other bed addition/terrace is out in the garden already but it's too dark and cold out there for me to want to go get a picture. Imagine this laid down with the right side as the bottom. It will connect to the top of an existing raised bed, creating 4 terraces.

Do you put any kind of liner in there so it's not just dirt against the wood or do you just fill er up and let it do it's thing?

I might line with weed fabric or plastic before filling. However, tasted wood these days is supposed to be safe for gardening as they use a different chemical than they used decades ago.

I was thinking more along the lines of longevity. If the wood is in contact with the soil I would not think it would last very long with the constant moisture and bug eaten etc etc.

I bit the bullet and bought a drip hydroponic system. It was already almost 30% off and I got a $30 coupon too. It’s easier than getting hubs to build it or let me use his tools to do it myself. He’s going to have to build me another stand for the last grow light, but I have four buckets and all the stuff to get set up. I also have my Aerogardens for lettuce and herbs and a grow light that I may put some strawberries under in a wicking system. We’ll see.
Drip hydroponic... 🤤😏 very nice!

It will be something like this pic from the internet, but 8ft long and 4ft wide with 4 levels.

Magnificient!

Just placed an order with Burpee. They had sent me a 25% off coupon, so I used that. There were a few seeds I was interested in, but one in particular was quite expensive, so I bought less expensive options instead. Mostly carrots, melons and tomatoes, with a few other things. I'm still on a quest to grow a honeydew melon....all past attempts across a few varieties have been failures. So, I ordered one from Burpee, we will see how that goes. Here is a pic of the honeydew I'll try. Interestingly, it is NOT in their paper catalogue.

Carrots: For anyone wanting to try carrots, We have good success and here are two that have generally produced very well for us. I'd recommend any "Nantes" type, actually, as they seem to produce well, break less, and taste good overall. The Yaya ones are available from many sources.

We got a small egg the other day - so a slacker must have started laying again. Looking forward to getting more eggs soon! So glad we bought high production birds last spring - they have gotten us through the winter. We bought 6 and they are an attractive bird too. We bought more chicks in mid August, and so those should start laying in Feb or March.

Agree. I have found NO rat/rodent killer/poison/pellet/cake that is poultry/other animal friendly- at least here in the North American system. (the user you are referring to is in Greece)
Even if the birds eat the poisoned (alive or dead) rodent, it will kill them as well. It is indiscriminate.

So good to hear from you! I had a hard time keeping DH home after surgery. He was uncomfortable sitting, uncomfortable standing, uncomfortable laying down. So he went with me everywhere and it took us two hours to grocery shop because those electric carts are so s l o o o o w w w w w. He was definitely ready for a shower too.

Will you be able to bend over after you heal? Hubs has limited bending capacity and has a 40 lb weight limit forever. Funny, sometimes he’ll grab the 50 lb bags of feed, other times he reminds me it’s over his weight limit
I asked about how long for no BLTs (bending, lifting, twisting) & was told basically forever. The disks above & below my fusion are both herniated, my surgeon said he assumes he will eventually see me to fuse at least one of them. He didn’t want to do them yet, they arent horrible right now & aren’t the source of my pain, but will probably go eventually. So, he said to me, I know you can’t live life with no BLT but one of those will do me in eventually so do with that what you will. How long ago did DH have his done & is he happy with the results? I query everyone because right now I have good days & bad days & can’t say it fixed me yet. They say it could be a year before I know for sure.

@Acre4Me what are the high production birds you have? I’m going back to the production reds - I can’t justify feeding & caring for birds that don’t lay. My spring order is all high production birds.
I have never had big issues with birds eating tomatoes either. I have had a bite here or there from critters, but not big issues. I love to let them ripen on the vine, nothing tastes better! But my season is so short most end up ripening in the house in the fall.

I have three breeds of high production, and while nice producers, I can't stand their attitudes/temperments. Longhorn, California Whites, and RedStars (red sex link).

I'm not selling much at the moment or this past year anyway. I consider them pets with bonus fruit at this point as I will never make enough money to keep up with their upkeep. People in town are complaining about the lack of eggs or the high price, and yet here I sit, licensed to produce eggs - permits and all- and I deliver! (I combine it with trips to town.) and Nope. $3.50 is too much. FCS it's ridiculous.

They make great gifts though.
