What did you do in the garden today?

Sheesh its cold out there! Girls won’t leave the coop, I threw scratch out, they came out for 30 seconds till the wind blew & ran back in. They never leave scratch! Buuut, I have another one laying as of today. 🤷‍♀️ Weirdos.

My buttercrunch lettuce is coming up well, nothing else has come up yet.

Not planning on leaving the house till this cold & wind are gone!

We braved the cold and started laying pavers. DW took three brunt of the cold really as she was bringing pavers to me in a bucket as I laid them in place. DS was hanging out with me in the greenhouse and we had a small electric heater going. DW did at least step in a few times to warm up and catch a break. In an hour we laid reused keystone pavers in an area measuring 3'x5'6". I have 3'x2'6" remaining and still need to cut pages to lay along the edge. It's looking good though. I plan to finish laying them tomorrow early in the day and then work in the truck in the afternoon. I'll take a pic of the pavers when we're done and share with you all.

DD wants to help me build the shelves next. Building things with a 3 yr old is always an adventure. LOL. I'm glad the kids are so eager to help though and their looking forward to planting and growing some of their favorite fruits and vegetables this year.

The sun warmed things up inside the coop and run. The chickens did go out into the run for water and stretching their legs but not for long. I’m hoping they’ll be ok overnight. I gave them lots of corn and black soldier fly for their dinner so hopefully that will keep them from freezing in -15 temps overnight.

Brrrrr! I went out to check on the girls & bring them a warm mash, it’s dang cold but thankfully the wind is done. -9 when I went out. I felt bad they stayed in the coop yesterday but they were all out at the top of the hill under the little coop. They don’t care too much about the cold if there is no wind. Even my molting old red with a big floppy comb is fine & out & about.

The top blew off my raised lettuce bad, DH had to chase it across the yard. Thankfully it didn’t break.

Good to know your chickens are all fine @Sueby. The wind was wicked bad most of the night here and my basement door was banging most of the time. My chickens made it through the -15 degrees and the winds. It was -12 when I went out and after peeling back the extra curtain I saw my rooster and several hens in the run working on breakfast. I gave them all scrambled eggs and warm water, followed by more pellets and scratch. Amazingly the thermometer inside the coop was sitting at zero. They’ll get warm mash after I have my breakfast.
