What did you do in the garden today?

Kholrabi - should I start indoors?

Zone 5B or furthest north of zone 6 depending on the map I look at. July is definitely too warm for cole crops here and June could very well be too. Yet I'm not truly frost free until May 1. I figure I should be able to have cole crops outside in March though, but will they germinate outside in March its the question?

in my experience, no not likely to germinate. But, yes, start them indoors. Good Idea!

yes, iris seeds.
I'll start those this week in the seed shed.
I have a bunch of purple iris I transplanted last year from my deceased grandmother's yard. I really hope those come back this year. I made a flower bed of them over my our old dog's grave. It will be a lovely purple corner of the yard if they come back and bloom.

Dont be surprised if they come up but do not bloom this year. They usually don't bloom the season after they've been transplanted/divided.

We had a beautiful 65 degree day today (boo, a work day). New record high for my area! I rushed home, dug up the carrots & parsnips I left buried over winter, and let my girls into that patch. They went to town. We are all happy now. Weather isn’t staying, but it was a lovely bonus day!

What do you do for your carrots? I have never had luck with them staying alive to produce

I hadn’t either until this year. I hoed the clay soil, added some soiled/composted shavings from the run, and some extra bagged soil on top. I raked it all together, and wet it really well when I put seeds down. Once they got decently big, I added more compost from the run. Wasn’t sure if it would be too much fertilizer, but they are the biggest carrots we’ve had yet.

I'm starting mine out of pots. The seeds haven't sprouted yet but it's only been a couple weeks. It's when they get transplanted into the ground is when they seem not to stay alive. I might try that when I transplant them is to really make sure they are fertilized to give them a little boost
