What did you do in the garden today?

Just put together the new raised beds. They included a free pair of gardening gloves in the box... Now I have 2 new pairs of gloves. 😊

My metal raised beds are holding up pretty well so far, better than the cedar ones for sure. I did get some galvanized spray to take care of a couple pop up rust spots. I think they are 3 years old. ETA, I take that back, I think 4.

So DH hadn’t been gone for Kentucky but a couple hours & I had to call my poor neighbor to come clean up dog puke. šŸ˜‚ It’s going to be a long month for my poor neighbor. 😬

Good afternoon gardeners. This has been a productive day! I cut down the one Vitex so Incould dig it out, and also did the same with another shrub next to the shade garden. I think it blocked too much of the breeze and it wasn’t growing in a good direction. Then the teenager broke my shovel :barnie We got the sugarcane out, all the debris from the rosemary and lavender into the compost pile, trimmed and caged the lantana I thought was dead, and moved the new feeder and an extra waterer into the coop yard. I also planted and caged the new Vitex and got out a cover for it for the night so it can adjust to outdoor temps.I still need to sweep all the straw back into the yard off the walkways and move the rain barrel, but it’s in much better shape back there. This week after work I’m going to get a grass frame set up since we’re supposed to be in the 70s by next weekend and I can see a few green blades in the dog yard.

I used some small pots and rocks to keep the chickens away from the wicks

Those green metal stakes and wire work great as cages!

I popped 3 old metal trellises into the edge of the new raised bed by the greenhouse and let the kids plant snap peas along thee base of the trellises. Then we went out too the mall so I could get new shoes and DW for a pair - she's not the typical shoe-loving woman, but rather somebody I hace to practically force to buy something for herself. We stopped at Michael's and got some paint supplies that I let the kids use to paint a bunch of rocks. In going to use the rocks as assigns in the garden to identify what we plant where. When the paint dries I'll write on each rock and then spray it with clear. The both got to paint a tiny statue too, DS choose a gnome and DD choose a bunny with flowers.

This bucket I’m using for spinach, parsley and cilantro. I have seeds started and when they’re big enough I’m going to use cloning collars to hold them in the holes in the bucket. The little holes are to allow air flow, or I can add an air stone if I want to later through one of them. I think I’m going to cover them with some bug netting to keep skeeters out.

I was able to do some transplanting into bigger pots today. I didn't think my seeds were doing well in their starters since they started to lean over. I got my carrots into a bigger pot so they are going to do well I think. I will have to snap some pictures.

Other than that today was a nice high 40's and dabbled a little into the 50's. Felt good to be outside all day and get some yard work done. Of course they are calling for snow this week just my luck but I believe it'll be the last snow fall of the season!

Edited to add that I checked on my bee hive today too. Nothing but drawn comb in the top box ( was drawn out last year). There were bees getting the sugar slush I put in there last week. I didn’t check the bottom box because I was taking too long. Only saw about 100 bees so that has me concerned. Hopefully the sugar slush will e enough to get them through this last bit of winter and am more hoping that there is a Queen in the bottom box doing her queenly duty.
I was thinking of getting into bees. How often/how much sugar do you have to feed them?

Not a lot. It's only used when winter food supplies, that they put up are running low, and things haven't started making pollen yet. And it depends on the number of colonies, and how active they are. It's not usually a big deal for a backyard keeper.
