What did you do in the garden today?

Rain coming this evening and tomorrow. Last 80 degree day and back to cooler temps. Lots to do before the rain.

I take pictures with my phone after I plant. If I plant seeds I lay the seed packet on the ground. For example:

I do that too! Very helpful.

I am prepared to fail, but I hope that I succeed.

Every year I inevitably plant something in a bed/location and then forget what I planted there. This year I SWORE I was going to put in a marker so I wouldn't forget... Except that I forgot the tongue depressors at the house and went ahead and planted anyway. Now I forgot what I planted...

I posted alway about this, but the kids painted rocks this year and I used a paint pen to then write plant names on all the rocks. They are working great as plant markers. I will eventually have to touch up the writing as it fades I an sure, but this adds stone color to the garden and makes identification easy. Only problem is we forgot about a few things we grow when making them so we need to paint more rocks. I do keep forgetting I put lacinato kale at the end of one bed, and the sprouts are not up yet so I kept getting tempted to accidentally plant over them.

I like this idea of rock markers and hope to make some for the fruit trees.

I’ve painted “kindness” rocks with the kids- the ones you leave in fun spots for others to find. Instructions for those include washing the rocks, and then drying the rocks before painting. I’ve put them into my oven on a low temp overnight, then removed to someplace dry before painting.

If there is water underneath, it can ruin the paint over time, so that is part of the reason for drying them. I’ve also found that spray painting the dry rocks before decorating makes for a nice smooth base to write and decorate. For the “kindness” rocks, groups also recommend to decoupage a label if you want the finder to post on fb (obviously not needed in the personal garden) , and spray on an exterior clear top coat.

Of the variety of rocks we’ve painted and left (with small labels) a few were posted on fb, which was fun for the kids to see who and where found. If anyone wants to do this, just look up kindness rocks in your area…have no idea how common this is though. I found out about it bc we found a rock with a label, so looked it up and posted.

Caught up finally on the thread here.

Headed out into the garden. Going to finish framing the shallow beds (used to be raised rows) and then get these onions planted today - same beds the tomatoes will go in. Greenhouse is going gangbusters out there! Tomatoes are getting huge! I should up pot to 6 inch pots, but they will be outside in just 2 more weeks, so not sure if I should just wait. Peppers are loving the warmth in the greenhouse too and growing well.

Lol. After typing the above, I thought I remembered some of the kindness rocks that were unfinished and stashed on a shelf. So, sure enough, in the garage, I found some. Kinda dusty, it’s been a few years I think.


Some are decorated, some are just spray painted, some are just cleaned (now dusty, but dry). It none have top coat, I don’t think.

I love cardboard in my gardens. I use it under mulch as a weed barrier.

I did that last year. This year I'm not using mulch because it was a pain to clean up

-four tomato varieties setting fruit! Cucumbers and squash are doing well. -harvested the last of the cabbage this morning. Bell pepper, salad pepper, and jalapeno plants are growing! -will harvest the rest of the lettuce later today.

All of the perennial gardens are blooming in cycles. The different iris varieties are showing off nicely. Society garlic and daylilies will be in bloom in a few weeks. Gaillardia, Scabiosa, and Coreopsis are blooming! (will weed these gardens after bringing in the lettuce) I planted elephant ear bulbs in large containers, and planted the tiered fountain/planter with asparagus fern.

-saw the first hummingbird yesterday!! Cardinals and sparrows are nesting in the Carolina Jessamine vines. I love this time of year!!
