What did you do in the garden today?

Good afternoon all. We have searched high and low for this welded wire fencing and can’t find it. I actually found a better deal on Amazon than I can get locally so Amazon it is. I watered a few things today and did have to stale one of the white sage plants out front yesterday. The Arabian lilac outside the wall is using water from the bucket so excellent news. So far it has been a week and it has used about a third of the bucket, can’t say I’m surprised. My daughter brought me a sign for the garden door so hubs put that up and fixed one of the waterers he didn’t get done right. It leaked 17 gallons of water in a week! The hose had a hole in it so that’s fixed. A few pics from the garden. I’m super happy with the new growth on the rosemary! I’m glad I stopped when I did to give it a chance to decide how it wants to grow; next Spring I’ll work some more on the shape. Oh, I brought home a hibiscus yesterday

Weather was mild, upper 70s and with a cool breeze, so I headed outside before noon. I wanted to get some trimming done with the cordless hedge trimmer I bought off eBay, but where to start?

Our blueberry bushes are about 15 years old and waning, so I shamefully neglected them last year. At one point I hired a DIY lawncare guy who didn't follow my directions and cut some of the bushes to the ground.

The weeds, honeysuckle, Virginia creeper AND POISON IVY had made a jungle of the area. I attacked it first with the hedge trimmer, between where the blueberry bushes used to be. Then I went in closer to see if there were any bushes left. Using my hand pruner and the long handled "loppers" I worked steadily until I had to go in the shade and cool down. I sat with my big chicks for close to an hour, then went back at it.

The area is almost clear, I just need to use the loppers to finish cutting down small maples and live oak trees that were stripped of branches by the trimmer.

Ta Da!

I did find two blueberry bushes alive. One is the tall one on the right, the other is just a couple small branches in front of it. I marked it with a couple small fence sections.

The rest of the small trees will be removed soon.

After a cool shower and an ice pack and lots of water I'm almost recovered. I just can't take a lot of outdoor labor anymore without coming close to heat exhaustion.

Thank you so much for this. It is almost exactly what I envision. I’m probably going to do a hoop coop run attached to the coop just like you have. I was also worried about creating additional drafts by adding the run to it, but you set my mind at ease with that as well. I’m going through all of your photos now 🙂

Does the ballcap have velcro or snaps???
(get chicken poop lip junk every year for the kids stockings....10 year on now. They love it.)

Was going to go out and look for asparagus, we have it wild here, but winds are pegging out at almost 60mph. So that's a nope. Hens want out. NOPE. I could fly them like kites!
It has snaps, which I prefer actually. I have several favorite caps with the velcro but it always gets caught in my hair!

If that big pile in the background is an indication of the mess you cleaned I’d say you did quite well!

I’ve had heat exhaustion before and it doesn’t seem to help as I feel like it’s easier
to have it now than years ago. Anyway, pedialyte the night before can help prep your body for being out there.

My go to beverage for rehydrating is cold Perrier. I’m guessing it’s the minerals in it that makes it just a bit better than plain tap water. Whatever it is, it works well.
