What did you do in the garden today?

Out hunting rampant cedar and wild plum trees. I' taking a break now, but only have the front ditch to do, 300 feet. BLEH. I'm waiting for my across the street neighbor is current spraying his acreage with toxic weed control and dandelion killer. GEESH. we friggen live in the middle of open country and cattle pastures, weeds are a part of life, but no, he must be weed free at all times, and he waters constantly and mows to 1.5-2 inches every Friday morning. GRRRR

I need to let that crap dry on his lawn before I work out there, so I can breathe.

I planted the jasmine, sedum, basil, oregano, and lemon balm. I know it will get cool again, but they are in the area I can easily cover and protect.

I bought some grape vines to grow this year. Two Einset (red), two Niagara (green). I don't dare plant them out for at least a week, as we're forecast for frost a week from today!

I saw a low of 33 last night around 3 am. There is a dusting of snow out there, and it's 35 now.

My blueberries are the farthest along, in the tight cluster stage. According to this site,
https://www.canr.msu.edu/blueberries/weather/critical-spring-temperatures
they can withstand 20-23 F, so I think they'll be fine.

A week from now, I'll probably have to cover them. :barnie
It's always a struggle and a concern not to lose our grapes due to a late freeze. However do you manage such a thing in the north? Are your varieties more tolerant of colder weather, I assume?

These are for zone 5-8, so maybe they're tougher...? I had thought about ordering some that were rated for zone 4, but never got around to it.

Our cold hangs on longer too, so they start later, I'd guess. My neighbor has a bunch of grape vines, and she gets a good harvest. I asked her what kind they are and she said, "Ummm... purple...?"

I went online to Johnny Seeds and ordered a tomato grafting kit, but the surcharge was $80, so I ended up with just a packet of Mochi cherry tomato (Indeterminate) and a packet of Apple Yellow cherry tomato (Indeterminate). The Apple Yellow cherry has positive reviews on YouTube and it has my needed TYLCV resistance. However, I will need to graft the Mochi cherry to a TYLCV resistant root stock to grow it in my yard.

I already figured myself out, I prefer the tomatoes that don't have the initial goo pop, so I know I will love the Mochi cherry.

I will use the seeds from my indeterminate Princess Yum Yum cherry tomatoes for the root stock or I will try grafting them to rooted cuttings.

Watered in the greenhouse and some garden beds. Freeze warning tonight with a low of 31. The 10 day forecast shows lows in the 40s after this. Hopefully this is our last freeze/frost.

Good news is some plants don't mind, including the baby bok choy we had with dinner today - our first harvest this year actually.
