What did you do in the garden today?

Got my ground cherries and cantaloupe planted tonight... I also found 3 volunteer cucurbits down in the area where I had a huge mulch pile that composted down. I'm pretty sure they are zucchini plants but who knows! The compost pile is very close by so it could be spaghetti squash, yellow squash, loofah. Doesn't look like watermelon...

Anyway, I also reseeded a few things that haven't sprouted yet.

Supposed to rain tomorrow and I'm helping my son transfer military bases on Sunday so no more opportunities to do more until early next week.

I get squash seedlings everywhere after spreading our compost in the garden. It amazes me how much they can handle. I've had a pile really cooking before even that I focused on turning frequently that was actually very hot to the touch and "sure enough!" squash seedlings came up even from that compost when it was spread. It is astounding!

First book has a good variety of Rhubarb recipes and info on picking and storage. Recipes are make and eat now, or for freezing, some canning info.

Second (Ball) also has good variety -but all for canning. I’ve made a couple and liked them.

Third, it’s a 32(?) page booklet. About $4 on Amazon and has many varied recipes.

Overall, more recipes than you would expect, beyond desserts.
I ordered copies of the first two books. They'll be here Monday.

Finally got to plant my Onion Sets and Lettuce and Spinach. Tilled a section for some Pumpkins and more Onion sets. My old Craftsman Tiller still does a great job but I need to replace the wheels. The pic that the tiller is in is where I had a Chicken Pen for about 20 years it’s been vacant for at lease 6 years thought I would try to grow some Pumpkins there.

You can sure get a good workout with those front-tine tillers! Especially on hard, clay ground.

Are you saying that if you trellis your summer squash you don't get squash bugs...? (SO hoping that you mean that...!)

Yes! I mean that! 😀
No place for them to hide, just bare dirt, a trunk, and sunshine. They don't like it at all.

Tying them up is not the easiest thing to accomplish, but it's worth it.

Lucky! It doesn't seem to stop ours. They even like our cucumbers. It is easier to find them in the trellis though!
I usually have much better luck with vining squash over bush squash though. I just enjoy the zucchini until the squash bugs win, lol.

@Sally PB my bee hive is doing great! I have 2 deep boxes in it and it seems like they are using the top box as a honey super. 😳The bottom deep box has 5 frames packed with capped brood. They have some pollen but not as much as I expected.
I’m not sure if I should put on another deep box so the queen has more room for laying eggs or if I should add an actual honey super. 🤷‍♀️
I’ve put the question to my local bee club and will see what they say.
