What did you do in the garden today?

I came really close to starting an asparagus bed this spring. Bought crowns twice, then returned them to Home Depot twice. Couldn't make up my mind until I decided that I just didn't have the time this year to prep a new asparagus bed. I should start working on one now to get it ready for next spring.

On my old farm I planted 100 asparagus roots in a bed that was about 6 by 30 feet. I ordered them without really thinking about all the work they say you need to put into the beds.

Consequently, when they arrived and stood out there feeling overwhelmed, I just said, "Forget it!" and buried them in rototilled soil about 4 inches deep.

I had a terrific asparagus bed for many years.

Melons are up!
(will take photos this weekend)

Tomatoes are climbing up the strings (with a little help), and both the peppers and the Summer squash are going gangbusters.

That's borage between the tomatoes.

The snow peas are producing but have fallen over so I have to hunt for the pods in the foliage.

My garden hose hardware fused to the hose bibb (faucet), so I tried cutting the hose hardware off but damaged the threads.

Now water shoots out no matter how much Teflon tape I use.
:barnie
There's a tool that will cut new threads a lot cheaper than paying a plumber to switch out the faucet, so I ordered one. It arrived this afternoon, and I may try it out tomorrow morning before it gets too warm for outside work. My front yard hose is also fused to the faucet. I'm going back to buying hoses with all brass fixtures, no more cheap alloys.

Try CB Blast on the front hose rather than cutting it off. Spray a bunch on and let it sit over night then try to use a wrench in the morning to remove it.

Dug up a bunch of old mulch and dirt in the garden pathways, DW laid landscape fabric and then I dumped and spread 5 wheelbarrows of gravel. That's 1- 24ft pathway section done. There's 147ft of pathway left to go... yea, it's going to take some time and probably another 3 or 4 yards of gravel in addition to the 4 yards I already ordered. Then it's on to the new shed/coop build, which I sketched plans for today and quoted materials cost for.

a friend of mine plowed my future garden. I am happy with soil. I did not expect it to be good. unfortunately 1 viper escaped.

is there anything I can use in my garden to deter snakes? I will probably be gardening with my muscovy ducks
Apparently snake hate the smell of ammonia. Could try ammonia soaked rags around the garden. There are pellets and liquids that are claimed to deter snakes also.

They don't like bare soil. They like to have places to hide like rocks and grassy tunnels.

Usually a tended garden is not where they will want to hang out.

Once in a while, one may wander through, but it won't stay long.

have an old one with a dial, and I'm sure it needs to be calibrated. But weights don't need calibration, and that's what I've wanted, just to be sure the pressure is right.
The next county over from mine, at the agriculture extension office, they will test and calibrate these pressure canner gauges. Maybe you could call and see if your county, or an adjoining one, offers this service.

Sick with a cold and cough today. Should rain this morning, then normal spring weather for the next week.

I think I’ll work in some of the garden beds and plan out what I’ll plant in the remaining beds.

We overseeded a couple of areas for the goats -adding Crimson Clover seeds, so I’ll need to figure out a fencing solution for these areas. Hopefully the clover seeds sprout and grow well.

Yeah, my county has a place that will do it. I have just really wanted one with the weighted gauges for a long time.

 And it's all shiny...
