What did you do in the garden today?

I'm not that hardcore. I sleep good at around 55 degrees or so. But I chopped all my hair off today so I might need it to be a little warmer tonight.

I'm not sure what else I'll be planting in the garden now. All my brassicas are growing, lettuce too. Artichokes, herbs, beets and chard. Onions (started from seed and not doing well), turnips, carrots, peas, beans, tomatoes, peppers. Kale, chives. Summer squash, cucumbers.

What am I missing? I still have some space left for planting. Suggestions?

I think this full spectrum two lamp grow light I got from Amazon is better than the Ferry Morse single fluorescent grow light and they cost the same with free Prime shipping.

The tomato seedlings started off under the Ferry Morse grow light, but they were getting leggy, so I took them outside for a few days before this new light came in the mail.

The reason I wanted to grow them inside is because I don't want them to get bitten by an insect that is carrying the TYLCV virus. I plan to graft a Mochi Cherry onto a resistant Yellow Apple cherry plant.

I started some French lettuce in one dome tray and 6 Jolene and 6 heat loving Roma tomatoes in another dome tray, both have the TYLCV resistance. I got the Roma seeds from a local seed company.

Beets, to make pickled beets...

Onions (started from seed and not doing well
This is the first time I've tried onions from seed. Not doing well here, either. Lots and lot of seeds sprouted, and about half of the little seedlings fell over and died. Or died and then fell over.

I've had MUCH better luck with sets, so I've planted about 3/4 of a pound of those, and have lots left to plant. I put a lot of them around my tomato plants. That means they don't go in the ground until the 'maters are in.

Does anyone know if there are any tricks to growing onions from seed?

unless mice like to chew baby plants
They sure do! A friend, that sells starts, lost ALL of them last year to mice in his garage.
My plan for my garden is taking shape. I'm thinking/hoping/trusting that we are done with 30s after tonight. I will start planting the tomato plants so that I can plant onion sets around them. Ready for stuff to be in the ground!
We had 30s last night & they're saying 1 more this week. Hopefully that's the end. I didn't cover anything, we'll see about the next one. The soil is pretty warm so it shouldn't be too bad. :fl
plowing finished. now I have to install watering pipes (first I have to buy them). still need a bit of plumbering work before I start installing them. where do I start? :idunno
I would love some pics of your new place!
Hey, has anybody heard from NewBoots? I miss her, hope she's OK.
I tagged her a few weeks ago but she didn't check in. I miss her too.

Morning all. Chilly here. DH brought the Dahlias out of storage for me & dug me 5 holes! I will divide open them up & see what I have. Hopefully I can get them in the holes this week & get some in the mail to you @littledog.

On my old farm I planted 100 asparagus roots in a bed that was about 6 by 30 feet. I ordered them without really thinking about all the work they say you need to put into the beds.

Consequently, when they arrived and stood out there feeling overwhelmed, I just said, "Forget it!" and buried them in rototilled soil about 4 inches deep.

I had a terrific asparagus bed for many years.
When we bought this place 14 years ago, one of the big selling points (for me, at least) was there was an existing 6' x 75" asparagus bed, we harvested so much beautiful asparagus over the years. They don't last forever unfortunately, and for the past 2-3 years they've produced less and less.
So last year, we made a pen for the roosters over the old asparagus bed, so they could till it and fertilize it. A few weeks ago we put them back in with the hens (so much drama, but everyone's calmed down now.) I got the majority of their pen taken down, all except the wire apron pulled out of the ground. Once that's done, I have some new crowns to plant in there, and hopefully start a new asparagus bed.

High of 70 and cloudy. The rains over 3 days amounted to a total of 2 tenths. Grafted trees and up potted columbine. I have wild columbine in bloom and it reseeds readily. The other type never seems to reseed. So this year I started some from seed. Oriental poppies in bloom. I have a double orange that has self seeded for 40 years. Other colors never do and die out. Cutting failures on maple, pear and persimmon this year. Root grafted mulberry are starting to push buds. Outdoor grafted ones nothing yet.
