What did you do in the garden today?

I bred a Breese rooster to a Cornish X hen and some of the babies had yellow, white, green and blue legs. I decided to keep only the white and blue legged birds and processed all the older chickens. I recently hatched 5 chicks and had 2 white leg roosters and one white legged hen, one yellow legged hen, and one blue legged hen.

The blue legged hen is the smallest and the yellow legged hen is the biggest of them all, its a monster. I am going to use her as my main meat bird hen on my next project. I plan to spawn her with my biggest white legged 2 year old rooster. I had to starve him and cut back on his feed at 4 months old. I didn't want him to become obese and die of health problems. I plan to process the chicks at 3 months old or sooner if they throw back to the Cornish X line.

My car looks like it's been abandoned for years.
The oak trees are shedding pollen now. Oak flowers all over; I could rake them up with a leaf rake!

I weeded some more today. A couple of my bees came by, checking things out. I said, "Hi there, little bee!" :) I like having them around. They are nothing at all like wasps.

It's cloudy now, but going to go clear. Which means we could get frost. The county north of us has a frost warning, and the county north of them has freeze warnings. :fl :fl

Got an apple tree, plum tree, Saskatoon Berry bush, currant bush and 3 raspberry bushes planted. Had to make a new in-ground bed for the raspberry with edging so they don't take over my yard.

Currently my "orchard" consists of:
-Northern spy and Honeycrisp apple
-Green gage, Toka, Brookred, Waneta and Black Ice plum,
- Evans sour cherry,
- Boyne Raspberry,
- Thiessen Saskatoon Berry
- Aurora/Borealis Haskap,
- Chippewa and Northland Blueberry,
- Ever-bearing Strawberry,
- Red Lake red Currant, Ben Nevis Black Currant,
-Rhubarb.

I know. It gives my allergist fits. But I work outside all day anyway. I do run it on my days off and at night so I can breathe and give my lungs and sinus' a break. But it's not cheap. We usually go from cold to hell on earth quickly, but this year, we've had some nice days.
I figured out my trigger from yesterday. I drove to the city and around with my windows down in the truck. Shoving pollen and dust directly up my nose at 70mph. Yep, that'll do it.

I had my house open in Florida and Alabama all the time. Slept with them open even in the winter. Neighbors thought I was crazy. They were not far wrong. :lau
If it's between 60 and 80 degrees, my HVAC is off and windows are open! I prefer fresh air. I prefer air movement, period. We have ceiling fans in every room that run 24x7 every single day of the year.

My ceiling fans run 24/7 as well, but I can't have the windows open, as when I do I get allergies bad, and the house gets damp.

Went out to check on the girls, 3 of the big girls missed curfew (the auto door) last night & spent the night outside so I had to go check on them - ran into the gray fox! I love that they are here, not a single chipmunk to be seen. & we usually have at least 5 living in the yard. Haven't noticed a dent in the squirrels though. The littles put themselves to bed again tonight, best behaved new girls I've ever had.

I bought two elderberry plants online (Stark Bros) the other day because they were on sale. The fruit trees we got from them are doing really well and leafing out quite a bit! Something has been munching on my sweet cherry and peach leaves, though. It's my fault for not spraying while they were dormant (because I kept forgetting to put spray on my shopping list).

We might get a frost tonight, so I covered the seedlings that needed to be covered and brought in the seedlings that aren't in the ground.

Which part of Michigan do you live in? We used to go camping up in Manistee every Mother's Day weekend to hunt morels when we lived up north 20 years ago. I can remember dealing with snow a few times... It's over 90 degrees down here today. I can't imagine being worried about frost right now.... 😂
