What did you do in the garden today?

So I fed lots of things & took some pics.

The new girls. I love that they're all a bit of a different color so I can tell them apart.

I'm going to plant my tomatoes and peppers today. It'll be sunny and hit 93 degrees here, but by 4PM my garden will be shaded. I'll put the plants in the ground then so they won't get stressed by sunlight. And tomorrow is supposed to be a little cooler, and partly cloudy to cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms. That should make the transplants happy while they adjust.

^^Funny, not funny, but you still made me laugh.

Tonight is the last cold night -- 39F forecast. I'll keep the plants in the dog crates and cover them up with the sheets and a plastic tarp.

And put frost sheets on the 7 pathetic strawberry plants to show them I still care.

Sometime this week, I hope to start planting out my starts. I need to do a final count of how many of each thing I have. I also need to look up what I can plant next to what, as I have a few new things.

I won't get my sweet potato slips until the end of May/beginning of June. I need to weed that spot really well, and then cover it with black weed block fabric. That stuff doesn't work as well as advertised for blocking weeds, but I'm hoping the black will help the soil warm up.

Morning. Happy Mothers Day to the Moms! My chickens got me eggs & my dog, well, he might have forgotten... :gig

My brand new pullets put themselves to bed last! Never seen anything like it. :yesss:

Not much happening in the garden, I will water the newly placed cuke seeds. DH pulled the rhubarb flowers & some weeds for me in the garden. It's a bit late, but I will feed the rhubarb today. I lost a small blueberry bush this year.

I cannot figure out why my lettuce won't grow. It's driving me crazy. It sprouted & there they stay. 2 teeny little leaves the size of an eraser on each one. :rant Pricy, organic raised bed soil new last year. A couple different packages/brands of seeds so it's not that, plus they sprouted. Any ideas? It's just lettuce & spring! It shouldn't be hard! :he
I had this issue with one pepper start this year. Not sure what happened but the other peppers were over a foot tall and the one was still jist two tiny leaves. I tossed it. Hopefully yours take off for you.

I wish my strawberry bed looked like yours. I failed to mulch it this past winter and only 4 plants pulled through. I moved the 4 together at the end of the bed. Need to replant the bed. Kids are a bit disappointed in the lack of berries this year. Oops!

Good morning. I added a coral vine to the outside run where a grapevine died.
I wanted to share how we keep our flock cool in the heat, here in Mesa Arizona.

We have a closed run, 35x17 feet that has netting and a large shade cloth. Because the need deep shade and lots of places to hide (from the mean girls, tehe) we planted a Arabian lilac and Mexican elderberry.
I do use fans once it is above 110' and misters.

I do put a heavy guard fence arpund the base so they don't do their dusts baths or dig.

They do not eat either of these. The Arabian lilac has a bit more droopy limbs, but I leave them that way so they do not go up into the tree/bush. It only gets about 20 feet tall and 20 feet wide, has pretty purple leaves in the cooler weather and is a evergreen. Once established it doesn't need as much water.
We have ducks and use the water around the elderberry since it does need more water.
They eat the fallen flowers and fruit, so that is a bonus for them, plus it is good for them.
