What did you do in the garden today?

I dug my garlic today. It's drying on the front porch right now. Some of the bulbs are the biggest I've ever grown. Here's one by my men's size 9 shoe for comparison:

One of them looked like this.

Anybody know what happened? The cloves were ok; 3 of them went into tonight's dinner. I didn't find any creepy crawlies in it.

I'm really impressed with the size of the bulbs. I think some of them will have more than the 4 cloves I've been getting in each bulb for the last 2 years.

What I did different this year:
New location in the garden.
Mulched with 3-4 inches of pine needles after they were planted.
They were planted over one of my hugelkultur ditches.

:pop Looking forward to hearing about the results! I may give them a try again
ground cherry crumble pie! Yum! That crumble topping is perfect with the ground cherries. And if you don't take the husks off, those ground cherries keep for a long time. (Giving you time to keep harvesting til you have enough for pies)

Watered 2 out of 3 of the gardens. Harvested 3 more spaghetti squash. Put up another cattle panel archway between 2 raised beds ( one of the beds doesn’t even have any compost or soil in it yet. 😂). Spread 2 more bags of mulch over cardboard for walkways between raised beds. Picked blackberries.
@jerryse I am trying to root a pear tree branch. I cut off the outer branch covering and then wrapped damp spagnum moss around it and then wrapped it with plastic wrap and secured with zip ties. Any idea if that will grow roots?
I also harvest 1 cherry tomato. 🤣

Forgot to report out on the spaghetti squash pizza recipe I tried. The spaghetti squash was mixed with mozzarella and eggs and seasonings and spread out and baked for the crust. Then you added pizza sauce , mozzarella and whatever toppings and then broil it.
You have to squeeze out tons of water from the squash first after you bake the squash.
It looked pretty good, tasted alright, but the crust needed to be crispier before I added the sauce and toppings. I will probably try it again and bake the crust longer to hopefully get it crispier.
The 11 year old and 8 year old didn’t notice that the crust was made from veggies. The almost 6 year old said, “It doesn’t taste right”.

Evening rain coming. Took some persimmon cuttings and potted them to root. Another experiment. Others have had success. My other cuttings are still looking good. Patiently waiting for roots to form.

I have had no luck with persimmons. this winter I bought 2 chocolate persimmons but they never got leaves although they looked alive. yesterday I pulled 1 out of the pot to throw it away and I saw 3 tiny thread-like green roots. I put it back in the pot. :fl

Ground Cherries - with all this talk about them, I looked them up, and my “weird looking tomatillos” are actually ground cherries!! I bought a 3-pack of tomatillo starts from the farm store- but, these are ground cherries. Luckily, we have several volunteer tomatillo plants from last year. I had started 3 varieties of tomatillos but they all died bc of my terrible starting mix which killed most of my starts. So now I have a few random tomato cages among my squash and potatoes protecting these volunteers. Now I need to find some ground cherry recipes!

I will keep this in mind for a GF pizza crust for me. I bet DH wouldn't even taste it, but he's not hampered by gluten issues.

If you make it again and it's better, please post about that and what you changes you made.
